WTO Outlines Trade Agenda For COP29 In Baku, Azerbaijan

At the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, this November, the WTO Secretariat, under the guidance of Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, mark its presence by contributing to a variety of trade-related events. In preparation for these engagements, the WTO has launched a comprehensive COP29 portal on its website, offering access to detailed information on the events, alongside timely news updates, photographs, and other relevant resources.

The Secretariat's involvement extends to significant participation in high-level discussions and activities. Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will attend the World Leaders Climate Action Summit on November 12-13. Moreover, the COP29 Trade and Investment House, among other venues, will host several key events where the Director-General will play a prominent role. These events are poised to facilitate critical dialogues on trade's impact on environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation efforts.

WTO Announces Plans for COP29 in Baku

A pivotal event scheduled during the conference is the Climate Finance, Investment, and Trade (FIT) Day on the 14th of November, 2024. This day will be dedicated to exploring how trade and investment can significantly boost climate finance flows and assist developing nations in achieving a just transition.

Stakeholders will delve into the crucial function of trade policies in reaching climate targets and fostering sustainable development. Additionally, the Azerbaijan COP Presidency will showcase its initiatives, and discussions will cover topics like sustainable stock exchanges and decarbonization strategies for the steel and hydrogen industries. There will also be a focus on integrating small and medium-sized enterprises from developing countries into eco-friendly value chains.

Collaboration is key to the success of these endeavors, as evidenced by the Trade and Investment House pavilions. These pavilions are a joint effort by Azerbaijan's Ministry of Economy, the WTO, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the International Trade Centre (ITC), and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

Echoing the model established during COP28 in the UAE, these pavilions will provide a dedicated space for stakeholders to engage deeply with the essential intersection of trade, investment, and climate action. They will host a series of interactive discussions, exhibitions, workshops, and demonstrations that aim to highlight innovative solutions in trade, investment, and climate resilience.

Moreover, the conference will see the launch of several publications by the Secretariat and its partners, enriching the dialogues with fresh insights and perspectives on the nexus of trade and climate action. These resources are expected to add substantial value to the discussions, offering attendees a well-rounded understanding of the critical issues at hand.

The WTO Secretariat's participation in COP29 underscores a concerted effort to harness the power of trade and investment as pivotal tools in the global fight against climate change. Through a series of high-level engagements, collaborative pavilions, and the dissemination of key publications, the Secretariat aims to contribute meaningfully to the discourse on sustainable development and climate action.
