Wildfire Preparedness Week Focuses On Protecting Workers From Smoke Hazards
As California enters Wildfire Preparedness Week, the spotlight turns to the critical issue of air quality, both outdoors and indoors, affected by wildfire smoke. Clark Seif Clark (CSC), a firm specializing in environmental and industrial hygiene testing, consulting, and training services, underscores the importance of identifying and mitigating exposure risks associated with wildfire smoke and other airborne pollutants.
Wildfires, along with fires from the wildland-urban interface, pose significant threats to air quality over vast areas, impacting not only those in close proximity to these events but also communities far removed from them. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), along with partner agencies, emphasizes the need for proactive measures during Wildfire Preparedness Week to safeguard people, communities, and businesses against the threat of wildfires.

Exposure to wildfire smoke can lead to a range of respiratory symptoms and exacerbate existing health conditions, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Particularly vulnerable are outdoor workers who cannot seek refuge indoors during periods of thick smoke. NIOSH also highlights potential risks to fetal development from exposure to wildfire smoke during pregnancy.
Derrick A. Denis, Disaster Ready Emergency Preparedness and Infection Control (DR EPIC) Program Industrial Hygienist and Senior Vice President for CSC, emphasizes the dangers of overexposure to wildfire smoke. "Smoke from wildfires can significantly degrade outdoor air quality near the fire and at great distances," Denis notes. He further explains that combustion byproducts not only affect outdoor workers but can also infiltrate buildings, compromising indoor environmental quality in homes, schools, offices, and other structures. Smoke residues and odors may linger both outdoors and indoors long after a wildfire event has concluded.
To combat these challenges, CSC offers a suite of services aimed at assessing and reducing exposure risks. These include indoor and outdoor air testing services, employee training on respirator use and air monitoring instruments, building assessments for evaluating filtration and engineering controls, as well as investigations into smoke residue and odors. CSC's commitment to raising awareness about protecting outdoor workers from wildfire smoke is exemplified through their sponsorship of an educational video available at: https://youtu.be/DCCc5ZuMDf4.
