Volvo EX30 Achieves Lowest Carbon Footprint Among Electric Volvo Models

The Volvo EX30 has been identified as the electric vehicle with the lowest carbon footprint across Volvo's range, according to a comprehensive life cycle assessment. This evaluation revealed that over a distance of 200,000 km, the EX30 emits a total of 23 tonnes of CO2, marking a significant reduction of approximately 60% compared to the XC40 ICE model. This analysis spans the entire life cycle of the vehicle, from the extraction and processing of raw materials to its eventual disposal.

One of the standout findings from the report is the impact of renewable energy on the car's carbon footprint. Utilizing wind-based electricity to charge the EX30 can decrease its carbon emissions by 42% against the global electricity mix and by 22% when compared to European electricity standards. In light of these findings, Volvo Cars is ramping up its investments in renewable energy infrastructure, aiming to enhance the environmental benefits of electric vehicles.

EX30: Volvo's Greenest Electric Car

Volvo has been transparent with its carbon footprint assessments for three of its fully electric models launched since 2019: the EX40, EC40, and now the EX30. By making these reports accessible, Volvo intends to support customers in making environmentally conscious choices when selecting electric vehicles. The introduction of the EX30 is a pivotal move towards Volvo's ambition to transition into a fully electric car company by 2030 and to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

The sustainability credentials of the EX30 are further bolstered by its use of recycled materials. Approximately one quarter of the aluminum and nearly one fifth of the steel used in its construction are recycled. Furthermore, around 17% of all plastics in the vehicle are derived from recycled sources. Efforts to minimize the environmental impact during supply chain and manufacturing processes have resulted in a reduction of the EX30's carbon footprint to 14.8 tonnes, accounting for over 60% of its total emissions.

Volvo is committed to further diminishing the CO2 impact of the EX30 through collaborations with suppliers aimed at reducing emissions from battery production and increasing the utilization of renewable energy and recycled materials. The production of the EX30 commenced in November 2023, and it has already garnered several accolades for its sustainability features and performance capabilities.

In 2023, Volvo Car Group reported an unprecedented core operating profit and revenue, alongside achieving record-breaking global sales. These milestones underscore Volvo's dedication to becoming an exclusively electric car manufacturer by 2030 while striving towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
