US Sets Path For Zero Emission Freight Corridors To Electrify Economy By 2040
The U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Department of Transportation have jointly announced a comprehensive strategy aimed at bolstering the deployment of infrastructure to support clean freight across the nation by 2040. This ambitious initiative, known as the National Zero Emission Freight Corridor Strategy, outlines a four-phase approach to significantly enhance the country's freight transportation system through zero-emission technology.
Sara Forni, the director of the Corporate Electric Vehicle Alliance (CEVA) at Ceres, praised this collaborative effort for its potential to deliver substantial financial, climate, and air quality benefits. According to Forni, the strategic expansion of zero-emission vehicle infrastructure, including charging stations, is crucial for companies looking to integrate clean vehicles into their supply chains. This move is expected to position the U.S. as a frontrunner in global clean transportation efforts.

The strategy is set to guide both public and private stakeholders in investing in zero-emission vehicle infrastructure development strategically located along heavily-used freight corridor segments and ports. This initiative is supported by Ceres and CEVA's advocacy for equitable charging station placements that cater to commercial vehicles, contributing to the launch of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program under the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021.
Furthermore, business backing has been instrumental in advancing significant state and federal policies, including the Advanced Clean Trucks rule and robust heavy-duty vehicle standards. These efforts are complemented by federal tax incentives for clean vehicles introduced in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, signaling to manufacturers the fleet operators' commitment to transitioning towards cleaner transportation options.
The National Zero Emission Freight Corridor Strategy not only aims to reinforce existing policies but also seeks to expedite private-sector engagement by ensuring the availability of necessary infrastructure for a clean and efficient freight system. It also focuses on facilitating advance planning for the widespread adoption of zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty trucks among utilities, regulators, charging networks, and fleets.
Ceres continues its mission to decarbonize the six highest emitting sectors of the U.S. economy, including transportation. The organization's Ambition 2030 initiative underscores the critical role of the National Zero Emission Freight Corridor Strategy in achieving U.S. climate objectives.
