University Of Alabama And Valworx Collaborate On Experimental Rocket Initiative

Valworx, Inc., a prominent supplier of actuated valves and controls, has announced a significant partnership with the Alabama Rocketry Association (ARA) to provide actuated valves for ARA's participation in the Friends of Amateur Rocketry Dollar Per Foot competition. This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for both organizations, with Valworx's technology playing a crucial role in the development of ARA's bipropellant rocket engine.

The ARA Liquids program embarked on its ambitious project to create a kerosene and liquid oxygen fueled engine in 2021. Achieving a milestone, the team conducted its first static hot fire test at the University of Alabama, demonstrating the engine's potential. Currently, the team is engaged in qualification testing to ensure the engine's readiness for flight. The decision to upgrade their test stand propellant management system led them to Valworx's air actuated stainless steel ball valves, known for their reliability under high-pressure conditions.

UA and Valworx's Rocket Project

Aidan Moncelle, Project Manager at ARA, highlighted the critical features of Valworx valves, stating, "We're working with high pressures, high flows, and a variety of fluids, and Valworx valves offer high performance under the demanding conditions of our system." He further emphasized the safety benefits of air actuation, enabling remote and autonomous operations.

Kurt Naas, President of Valworx, expressed enthusiasm about supporting emerging aerospace leaders through this partnership. "Valworx is excited to play a part in supporting the next generation of aerospace leaders and we wish them much success," Naas remarked.

The ultimate goal for ARA is to integrate the engine into a rocket for launch at the Friends of Amateur Rocketry Dollar Per Foot competition in Mojave, California. This event is highly anticipated as it showcases the capabilities and innovations of amateur rocketry enthusiasts.

The Alabama Rocketry Association is a student-led organization at the University of Alabama. Since its inception in 2015, ARA has rapidly expanded to over 80 members from various academic disciplines within the College of Engineering. The association is committed to providing exceptional collegiate engineering experiences through participation in national and international rocketry competitions. ARA's focus on designing, building, and flying both solid and liquid-fueled rockets underscores its dedication to hands-on learning and professional development.
