UN High Commissioner Volker Türk Urges Immediate Action Amid Israel-Iran Military Escalation
Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has expressed grave concern over the rising military tensions between Israel and Iran. He urged both nations to de-escalate and engage in urgent talks to stop reciprocal attacks and find a way forward. Türk emphasised the importance of adhering to international law, particularly in protecting civilians in densely populated areas.
Türk highlighted that civilians are frequently targeted, humanitarian aid is obstructed, and aid workers face threats. He noted that accountability is often lacking in these situations. The methods used by Israel in its military operations have caused "horrific and unacceptable" suffering for Palestinians in Gaza. According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, over 55,000 Palestinians have been killed, including thousands of children.

The High Commissioner stressed the need for immediate investigations into incidents involving civilians trying to access food distribution points. He called on influential parties to pressure both Israel and Hamas to end the suffering. Türk also warned about daily attacks in the West Bank by Israeli forces and settlers, leading to killings, arrests, and forced displacement of Palestinians.
He reiterated that settlements and annexation are illegal under international law. At the same time, he acknowledged ongoing attacks by Palestinian militants on Israeli civilians in Israel and the occupied West Bank. Türk stated that an immediate ceasefire is essential for a viable two-state solution where Gaza is part of a Palestinian state.
A ceasefire could pave the way for lasting peace. Türk called for the unconditional release of all Israeli hostages and all Palestinians arbitrarily detained. On Yemen, he urged Houthi authorities to release UN staff, civil society workers, and diplomatic mission members unconditionally.
Addressing another issue, Türk raised concerns over mass detention and deportation of non-citizens in the United States. He called on US authorities to respect human rights in law enforcement and avoid using military force when civilian authorities can maintain public order.
Challenges Posed by Artificial Intelligence
Türk also addressed challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI), warning that while digital technologies offer promise, they also have a dark side. He cautioned that failing to act swiftly could lead to unpredictable consequences for human rights enjoyment.
He pointed out that AI use in military systems has already led to significant civilian casualties. Additionally, AI-enabled mass surveillance poses serious threats to privacy and freedom of expression.
The High Commissioner’s remarks underscore the urgent need for dialogue and adherence to international norms amid escalating conflicts worldwide. His call for action highlights the importance of protecting human rights while navigating complex geopolitical landscapes.
