UN Secretary-General António Guterres Voices Concern Over Human Toll From Intensified Hostilities In Gaza
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced deep concern over the escalating violence in Gaza, highlighting the severe human cost. He condemned the deaths of over a thousand individuals, including women and children, following the breakdown of the ceasefire. The situation has led to significant destruction and displacement, with more than 100,000 Palestinians forced to flee Rafah in just two days.
Guterres emphasised the importance of safeguarding medical and humanitarian workers during conflicts. He called for adherence to international humanitarian law, which mandates the protection of civilians and aid workers. The Secretary-General also stressed the urgent need to allow life-saving assistance into affected areas without obstruction.

The UN chief reiterated his condemnation of the attacks on Israel by Hamas and other Palestinian groups on 7th October 2023. He stated that these acts of terror have no justification, nor does the collective punishment of Palestinians. Guterres urged for an immediate ceasefire, release of hostages, and unrestricted humanitarian access across Gaza.
In response to Israel's plans to expand its control in Gaza, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric referred to Security Council resolution 2735 (2024). This resolution opposes any demographic or territorial changes in Gaza that could diminish its territory. The Secretary-General is worried about rhetoric encouraging Israeli military expansion into new territories.
The conflict has severely impacted aid workers in Gaza since October 2023. At least 408 aid workers have lost their lives, including 280 from UN humanitarian teams. Guterres honoured these workers and called for a comprehensive investigation into their deaths.
Dujarric reported a shocking incident where an Israeli attack on a medical convoy resulted in 15 deaths among medical staff and humanitarian workers on 23rd March. This highlights the dangers faced by those providing essential services amid ongoing hostilities.
The Secretary-General remains committed to ensuring that all parties respect international laws protecting civilians and aid workers. He continues to advocate for peace and stability in the region through dialogue and adherence to established resolutions.
The ongoing conflict underscores the need for immediate action to prevent further loss of life and suffering. The UN's efforts focus on restoring peace while ensuring humanitarian support reaches those most in need.
