Ukraine Accepts US Ceasefire Plan, Calls For Immediate Peace Talks With Russia
In a pivotal move towards peace, Ukraine has signaled its willingness to adopt a 30-day ceasefire, as suggested by the United States, to halt the ongoing conflict with Russia. This decision hinges on Moscow's agreement to the same terms, an arrangement aimed at paving the way towards a lasting resolution.
The announcement came after discussions in Jeddah, where both parties concurred on initiating immediate negotiations and assembling their negotiation teams to secure Ukraine's future security and peace.

Following the discussions, significant shifts in the United States' stance were observed, including the lifting of the suspension on military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. This reversal, announced by the Trump administration, ends a hiatus intended to press Ukraine into peace talks with Russia. This development underscores a renewed commitment to supporting Ukraine amidst the conflict.
President Zelenskyy, though not present at the Jeddah talks, endorsed the ceasefire proposal, stating that it aligned with Ukraine's ongoing quest for peace. He emphasized Ukraine's readiness for peace and challenged Russia to demonstrate its willingness to end the hostilities. Zelenskyy's statement highlighted the comprehensive nature of the proposed ceasefire, extending beyond aerial attacks to encompass all frontline activities.
This ceasefire proposition signifies a unified front between the US and Ukraine in the quest for peace, marking a notable departure from previous interactions. Andriy Yermak, a top Ukrainian official, reflected on the discussions as a testament to Ukraine's dedication to securing a just and durable peace. This sentiment was echoed by President Zelenskyy, who praised the constructive dialogue in Saudi Arabia and outlined Ukraine's peace objectives, including halting military aggression and fostering confidence-building measures.
The US, represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has been tasked with presenting the ceasefire proposal to Moscow. Rubio's remarks to the press emphasized the importance of Russia's response in determining the prospects for peace. The joint US-Ukrainian statement from the talks highlighted the immediate nature of the ceasefire and the possibility of its extension by mutual consent, setting a precedent for future negotiations.
Furthermore, the discussions in Saudi Arabia broached the topic of securing agreements on critical raw minerals, indicating a broader scope of negotiation beyond the immediate ceasefire. President Zelenskyy's updates via X provided insight into the detailed and constructive nature of the discussions, reinforcing Ukraine's unwavering commitment to achieving peace.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's role in facilitating discussions between the United States of America and Ukraine has been highlighted as a testament to its significant influence on global security and stability.
Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), emphasized the international community's trust in the Kingdom's capabilities to foster peace and resolve conflicts through diplomatic channels.
Albudaiwi pointed out that these negotiations serve as an extension of the Kingdom's continuous endeavors to mediate the crisis in Ukraine, demonstrating its dedication to maintaining balanced relations with all involved parties while prioritizing global peace and security.
This initiative is part of the Kingdom's broader strategy to uphold international cooperation and collective efforts aimed at addressing major concerns that threaten peace and security worldwide.
"This commitment is rooted in a legacy of wise political initiatives and commendable efforts that have positioned the Kingdom as a trusted mediator in numerous regional and global crises. Additionally, it aligns with the Kingdom's unwavering policy of enhancing international cooperation and unifying efforts to resolve major issues affecting regional and global peace," Albudaiwi added.
