Over A Third Of UK Drivers Prefer To Fix Minor Car Issues Themselves, Study Finds

In the face of escalating living costs, a significant number of UK motorists are opting to address minor car issues themselves rather than seeking professional assistance. This trend emerges from a recent study conducted by eBay UK, highlighting the financial pressures and strategic choices drivers are making to manage car maintenance costs. The research, which surveyed over 2,000 UK car owners and drivers, sheds light on the growing inclination towards DIY car repairs amidst economic challenges.

According to the findings, 35% of respondents prefer tackling minor car problems on their own, a decision driven largely by the desire to save money. This approach is particularly relevant as motorists navigate advisories issued during March, the peak month for MOT tests. The study further reveals that 34% of car owners postponed addressing MOT advisories last year due to financial constraints, with an additional 33% citing inability to afford repairs as a key reason for delay.

The reluctance to promptly address advisories is underscored by the fact that one in ten drivers do not perceive these notices as significant. Consequently, nearly a quarter (22%) admit to delaying necessary repairs for as long as possible. This procrastination is concerning given that the most common MOT failure issues include inoperative lamps, reflectors, and electrical equipment (23%), suspension problems (18%), brake issues (14%), and defective tyres (13%).

eBay UK's study not only highlights motorists' repair strategies but also offers solutions through its online marketplace. Arjang Salehi, Category Lead – Vehicle Parts and Accessories at eBay UK Ltd, emphasizes the platform's commitment to easing the repair process. With features like My Garage and the Assured Fit promise, eBay aims to simplify finding and fitting the right parts for various car models.

Hannah Gordon, eBay UK’s expert mechanic, echoes this sentiment by pointing out that many minor faults can be easily rectified by drivers themselves. By leveraging eBay's resources, motorists can efficiently source and install necessary parts, thereby saving both time and money.

The research also delves into MOT failure rates across the UK, identifying locations with the highest average failure rates in 2023. Kirkcaldy leads with a 37.38% failure rate, followed closely by Llandrindod Wells (36.37%) and Dundee (36.30%). These statistics are based on data obtained from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) through a Freedom of Information request.
