Toyota Gazoo Racing Sets Sights On Fourth Win At The Challenging Safari Rally Kenya
The Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team is poised for the Safari Rally Kenya, the sole African leg of the FIA World Rally Championship, slated for March 28-31. Known for its rigorous demands, the Safari Rally stands as a formidable test in motorsport. Yet, Toyota has demonstrated exceptional prowess, securing three consecutive wins and contributing to an impressive record of 11 victories at this event. The team's lineup boasts formidable talent with double world champion Kalle Rovanperä, Elfyn Evans, and Takamoto Katsuta. Rovanperä, the 2022 event winner and runner-up last year, alongside Evans' consistent top-three finishes and Katsuta's podium successes in Kenya, underscore the team's strength.
This year marks a return to the rally's traditional early-year scheduling, potentially increasing rainfall and transforming dry tracks into challenging mud baths. In response, teams can now equip Rally1 cars with snorkel systems for navigating deep waters or soft sands without compromising engine air intake. Additionally, TGR-WRT is set to debut an enhanced suspension system aimed at boosting both performance and reliability. The Safari Rally is set to be the longest in the modern WRC era, covering 367.76 competitive kilometers, starting from Nairobi and centering around Lake Naivasha.

The event will kick off with two loops of three stages around Lake Naivasha on Friday, followed by a more demanding day on Saturday with routes around Lake Elmenteita. The rally will conclude on Sunday with two more loops of three stages by Lake Naivasha, culminating in the Power Stage at Hell's Gate. Team Principal Jari-Matti Latvala expressed enthusiasm for the unique challenges posed by the Safari Rally, particularly due to the potential for inclement weather conditions. He emphasized that intelligence over speed would be crucial for success.
Rovanperä is gearing up for what he anticipates to be tough and slippery conditions owing to the rainy season. Evans views the Safari Rally as an unpredictable extreme event but aims to strike a balance between aggression and car preservation to secure valuable points. Katsuta is equally eager and focused on maintaining a reliable car to ensure a strong finish for the team.
With its storied history of testing drivers' limits and vehicles' durability, the Safari Rally Kenya remains a highlight on the World Rally Championship calendar. Toyota Gazoo Racing's strategic preparations underscore their commitment to extending their winning legacy while navigating the unpredictable terrains of this iconic rally.
