Tokyo Innovation Base: Elevating Tokyo As A Global Startup Hub By 2024

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has recently unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming Tokyo into a leading global center for innovation and entrepreneurship. The Tokyo Innovation Base (TIB), a fusion of a startup campus and business networking hub, is set to invigorate the local startup landscape and establish Tokyo as a top destination for innovative minds worldwide.

Launched with the objective of fostering innovation and propelling societal advancement, TIB is a strategic move by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. This initiative is part of a broader "Five-Year Startup Development Plan" revealed in November 2022, which outlines aggressive targets including the expansion of annual startup investments from 800 billion yen to 10 trillion yen by FY2027. Additionally, the plan aims to cultivate 100 unicorn companies and support the creation of 100,000 startups. Governor Koike Yuriko articulated her vision for TIB, emphasizing its foundational values of global perspective, growth, collaboration, and connectivity. She expressed her commitment to nurturing innovators from Tokyo and beyond.

TIB is poised to energize Tokyo’s startup ecosystem by promoting collaboration, accessibility, and networking opportunities. It serves as a dynamic platform where entrepreneurs, investors, corporate representatives, and government officials can interact and share ideas. With over 140 corporate partners already on board, TIB is facilitating ecosystem collaboration by linking startup ecosystem builders and investors with key stakeholders in Tokyo and across Japan.

This support ranges from industry-specific guidance to general assistance such as pitch training, business ideation, and establishing partnerships with Japanese corporations.
