Tokyo Introduces Global Hypergrowth Program To Elevate Tech Scaleups

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government, in collaboration with Startup Genome, has officially launched the Global Hypergrowth Tokyo program on March 26th, 2024. This innovative initiative is designed to accelerate the growth of Tokyo's most promising tech companies, facilitating their successful entry and expansion into international markets. The program specifically targets high-growth startups, recognizing their pivotal role in driving economic development, competitiveness, and societal wellbeing.

Global Hypergrowth Tokyo addresses a critical gap in support for rapidly expanding scaleups, which often struggle with accessing the necessary expertise for global commercialization. Unlike traditional programs that focus on early-stage startups, this initiative provides 22 selected companies from Tokyo with invaluable resources. These include access to a global network of mentors, expert scaling advice from seasoned executives, go-to-market support, and connections to potential customers and investors worldwide.

Tokyo's New Tech Scaleup Program

Chieto Misumi, Director of the New Ventures Support Section Commerce and Industry Division Bureau of Industrial and Labor Affairs at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (in charge of TOKYO SUTEAM), expressed enthusiasm about the program's launch. Misumi highlighted the ambitious '10x10x10' goal, aiming to significantly increase the number of unicorns, startups, and collaborative projects in Tokyo within five years. The Global Hypergrowth Tokyo Program is a key component of this strategy, aiming to globalize Tokyo's startup ecosystem by facilitating startups' entry into major markets such as the US and Europe.

The inaugural cohort features some of Tokyo's most promising scaleups across various sectors, including deep tech, healthtech, and AI. These companies have collectively raised close to 100 million USD in funding as they prepare for international expansion. Their customer base spans the U.S., Europe, and Asia, showcasing the global potential of Tokyo's innovative startups.

Among the selected companies are Aerosense, which offers proprietary industrial drones with cloud services; Aladdin, focusing on waste management solutions through robotics and AI; and Auxilart, providing hybrid modeling solutions for pharmaceutical manufacturing optimization. Other notable participants include BIOTECHWORKS-H2 with its initiative towards decarbonization through waste conversion to hydrogen and bitBiome, which leverages a vast database of microbial sequences for enzyme services and products.

This diverse group of companies represents the cutting edge of technology and innovation in Tokyo. With the support of the Global Hypergrowth Tokyo program, these scaleups are poised to make significant strides in their respective fields on a global stage. The initiative not only underscores Tokyo's commitment to fostering innovation but also sets a new standard for supporting high-growth startups aiming for international success.
