Study Shows TikTok Contributed $24 Billion To U.S. Economy, Empowering SMBs
Oxford Economics recently unveiled the results of a pivotal study, shedding light on the substantial economic impact U.S. small- and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) have experienced through their engagement on TikTok. Conducted in the summer of 2023, the research presents a compelling case for the platform's role in bolstering the U.S. economy. Specifically, it was found that SMBs active on TikTok generated close to $15 billion in revenue throughout 2023. This figure, combined with the value attributed to TikTok's free services that facilitate organic growth, culminated in a $24.2 billion contribution to the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP).
The study further reveals that nearly 40% of SMBs regard TikTok as essential to their operational survival. This sentiment is echoed across a landscape where TikTok hosts seven million businesses and sustains 170 million active users within the U.S. alone. The findings from Oxford Economics also highlight that SMBs utilizing TikTok supported approximately 224,000 jobs and contributed $5.3 billion in taxes to the U.S. government in 2023. Moreover, TikTok’s own operations within the U.S. were shown to bolster the GDP by an additional $8.5 billion, contribute $2 billion in taxes, and support 59,000 jobs across the national economy.

TikTok's influence extends across various sectors, with its impact being particularly pronounced within the food and beverage industry—supporting $6.4 billion and 73,000 jobs in 2023 alone. The health and wellness sector saw a contribution of $3.9 billion, while business services accounted for $3.6 billion, underscoring the platform's versatility and its capacity to nurture a diverse range of industries.
Commissioned by TikTok in May 2023, this study not only underscores TikTok's role in driving business growth but also highlights its significant economic footprint within the United States. As businesses continue to leverage TikTok for marketing and engagement purposes, the platform has proven itself as a dynamic economic engine that promotes growth, spurs innovation, and opens up new opportunities for both businesses and individuals nationwide.
The insights garnered from this research offer a clear testament to TikTok's evolving role within the social and economic fabric of the U.S., serving as a vital platform for learning, engagement, and prosperity among individuals and businesses alike.
