ThermAvant And NASA To Advance Thermal Management In Electrified Aircraft Propulsion

ThermAvant Technologies, a pioneer in thermal management systems, has recently embarked on Phase II of a project with NASA, focusing on the development of an innovative heat sink technology for electrified aircraft propulsion systems. This collaboration is part of NASA's 2020-I SBIR A1.04 Electrified Aircraft Propulsion (EAP) initiative, which seeks to enhance the temperature control of critical aircraft components amid increasing heat loads and stringent size and mass requirements.

In the initial phase, ThermAvant Technologies demonstrated a state-of-the-art thermal management system (TMS) featuring an Additively Manufactured Oscillating Heat Pipe (AM-OHP) heat sink. This technology embeds the OHP within power-dense heat sinks through additive manufacturing, offering several advantages over traditional methods. Notably, it achieves a specific heat transfer capacity exceeding 4 kW/kg, reduces mass by 50% compared to solid metal heat sinks, and significantly shortens design and manufacturing cycles.

Advancing Aircraft Thermal Management

Patrick Margavio, the Principal Investigator at ThermAvant Technologies, expressed his enthusiasm about the project's potential impact. "We are honored to collaborate with NASA on this transformative endeavor. AM-OHP technology holds the potential to make significant strides in enhancing aircraft fuel/energy economy and reducing emissions, especially for mechanically complex geometric structures," he stated. This technology not only supports the burgeoning electric aircraft market, projected to reach $27.7 billion by 2030 but also demonstrates versatility across various applications beyond aviation.

The benefits of this innovative project are expected to extend to multiple sectors, including NASA's Advanced Air Transport Technology (AATT) program and small electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft. ThermAvant Technologies continues to leverage its expertise in thermal-mechanical solutions to advance mission-critical technologies and foster innovation within the aerospace industry.
