Telefónica Tech To Digitise Santiago De Compostela's Public Lighting For Enhanced Efficiency

In a significant move towards the digitalisation of public infrastructure, Telefónica Tech has been chosen as the technology partner for a joint venture between Ferrovial and Endesa X. This collaboration aims to revolutionise the outdoor public lighting system in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The project focuses on implementing a smart lighting solution that promises not only to enhance energy efficiency but also to improve the overall quality of lighting services for both residents and visitors of the Galician capital.

The initiative is part of a broader maintenance and supply project awarded to the joint venture, targeting the outdoor public lighting of Santiago de Compostela. Telefónica Tech, in partnership with Tellink, is set to deploy an intelligent lighting system that allows for the remote management of LED luminaires. This innovative approach is expected to lead to significant improvements in operational efficiency and energy savings.

Smart Lighting in Santiago by Telefónica Tech

With the deployment of over 10,000 nodes equipped with NB-IoT connectivity, designed and manufactured by Tellink, Telefónica Tech aims to monitor the performance of streetlights closely. This technology enables the detection of potential failures in real-time and facilitates the transmission of collected data to an advanced software platform for further analysis and management.

The smart LED lighting system introduced in Santiago de Compostela is designed to adapt to the specific needs of each municipality. It offers flexibility in managing lighting levels, such as adjusting light intensity during nighttime or tailoring illumination for special events. This level of control not only contributes to energy conservation but also enhances maintenance efficiency and installation management.

Alfredo Serret, global director of IoT at Telefónica Tech, highlighted the transformative potential of this project. He stated, "Our solution for remote management of luminaires provides intelligence to public lighting to provide significant efficiencies, in addition to those of LED technology, and contribute to the sustainability of cities." This initiative marks a step forward in evolving traditional urban environments into Smart Cities, where interconnected elements work together to improve citizen services.

Dionisio Martínez, CEO of Tellink, expressed pride in contributing their expertise towards offering Santiago de Compostela's inhabitants and visitors optimal outdoor lighting solutions. He emphasized Tellink's commitment to responsible and sustainable outdoor lighting practices, aligning with initiatives like Slowlight that advocate for environmentally friendly approaches.

Telefónica Tech's smart lighting solution has earned the Telefónica Eco Smart seal, verified by AENOR, acknowledging its environmental benefits. Currently, around 60% of Telefónica Tech's services boast this eco-friendly distinction, underscoring the company's dedication to sustainability.

This collaboration between Telefónica Tech, Ferrovial, Endesa X, and Tellink represents a significant leap towards enhancing urban living through technological innovation. By prioritizing energy efficiency and sustainability, Santiago de Compostela sets an example for cities worldwide in embracing smart infrastructure solutions.
