STMicroelectronics Debuts New Trench Schottky Diodes For Superior Power Efficiency
In a significant development in the electronics sector, STMicroelectronics, based in Geneva, Switzerland, has unveiled a new series of 100V trench Schottky rectifier diodes on March 26, 2024. These advanced components are set to enhance the efficiency of power converters operating at high switching frequencies, a crucial aspect for a wide range of applications including telecom, server, smart-metering equipment, automotive LED lighting, and low-voltage DC/DC converters.
The introduction of these diodes comes at a time when the industry is moving towards higher power densities, facilitated by the reduced switching losses offered by wide-bandgap semiconductors. Traditional planar diodes, including silicon Schottky devices, have been identified as a bottleneck due to their significant energy losses at high frequencies. STMicroelectronics' trench Schottky diodes address this issue head-on by offering superior forward-voltage and reverse-recovery characteristics. This not only enables an increase in power density but also enhances overall efficiency by approximately 0.5%.

The new family of diodes includes 28 variants with eight different current ratings ranging from 1A to 15A and comes in multiple surface-mount packages suitable for both industrial and automotive applications. The industrial-grade parts are designed for use in miniature switched-mode power supplies and auxiliary power supplies for telecom, server, and smart-metering equipment. Automotive applications include LED lighting, reverse-polarity protection, and low-voltage DC/DC converters. These parts are AEC-Q101 qualified and manufactured in PPAP-capable facilities, ensuring their reliability across a temperature range of -40°C to 175°C.
When used in conjunction with ST's flyback and buck-boost converters, such as the VIPer controllers and HVLED001A offline LED driver, these 100V trench Schottky rectifiers complete the active-components bill of materials for switched-mode power supplies. The diodes are supported by ST's eDesign Suite Rectifier Diodes Simulator, which aids in selecting the appropriate rating and footprint, simulating waveforms, and estimating power efficiency.
To guarantee device robustness and system reliability, the diodes undergo 100% avalanche testing during production. They are available in various surface-mount packages including DPAK, SOD123 Flat, SOD128 Flat, SMB Flat, and PSMC (TO227A). With production already underway, budgetary pricing for these components starts at $0.107 for the 1A STPST1H100ZF in SMD123 Flat package.
