Starlizard Integrity Services Flags 167 Football Matches As Suspicious In 2023

In a comprehensive analysis conducted by Starlizard Integrity Services (SIS), a London-based sports integrity specialist, a total of 167 football matches played globally in 2023 have been flagged as suspicious. This finding emerges from an extensive review of over 65,000 games, encompassing both national and international competitions, as well as non-competitive matches. The study indicates a 16% increase in the number of suspicious matches compared to the previous year, although the percentage of such matches has seen a decrease from 0.39% in 2022 to 0.26% in 2023.

The SIS report provides a detailed breakdown of the geographical distribution of these suspicious matches. Notably, the UEFA (European) region accounted for 69 of the suspicious matches, translating to 41.3% of the total, yet this figure represents only 0.18% of all UEFA matches analyzed. This is below the global average of suspicious matches, which stands at 0.26%. Conversely, the AFC (Asian) region recorded the highest regional percentage of suspicious matches at 0.47%, with international matches also showing a significant percentage of suspicion at 0.52%.

167 Football Matches Flagged in 2023

Interestingly, the report highlights that just under half (49.7%) of all suspicious matches in 2023 occurred in domestic leagues below the top tier. However, top-level leagues were not entirely exempt from scrutiny, with over a quarter (25.2%) of suspicious matches occurring within these ranks. The analysis also points to a high risk associated with club friendly and youth matches, which accounted for 10.8% and 6% of the suspicious matches respectively, despite representing a smaller fraction of the total games analyzed.

A significant finding from the SIS report is the marked increase in suspicious betting activities related to First-Half Only markets. Of the 167 matches flagged in 2023, 45 (27%) involved betting exclusively on these markets, a substantial rise from just six games (4.2%) identified in 2022.

Matches are categorized as "suspicious" based on suspect betting patterns that may indicate potential match-fixing activities. While the level of suspicion varies across different matches, SIS asserts that all identified cases warrant further investigation to uphold the integrity of football.

Expert Commentary

Affy Sheikh, Head of Starlizard Integrity Services, expressed concern over the persistent threat posed by suspected match-fixing to football's integrity. "Our enhanced data collection and analysis capabilities have allowed us to uncover a worrying number of suspicious matches," Sheikh stated. He emphasized that SIS sets high standards for allocating suspicion ratings to minimize false positives but acknowledged that combatting match-fixing remains a significant challenge.

Sheikh also noted the worrying trend in First-Half Only betting and highlighted the vulnerabilities associated with club friendly and youth matches.
