St. Vincent De Paul College Prep Welcomes New Principal And Secures Future With New Lease And Funding
St. Vincent de Paul College Prep (SV) has officially commenced its new phase as an independent Catholic school, starting on June 1st. The school, located in Petaluma, serves students from across the North Bay, including Marin County, where 40% of its students reside. The announcement of a long-term lease agreement with the parish and diocese has been well-received by the community.
Lisa Lichty, a board member and parent, expressed optimism about the school's future. "Being an independent Catholic school brings us more opportunity," she said. "We maintain everything that has been a positive part of our culture — academics, sports, and more — while overcoming the major challenges faced over the past several years."

The new board-led model allows for greater flexibility and creativity in meeting the school's needs. This approach aims to build strong academic and cultural programs while preserving the institution’s traditions. Community support has been significant, ensuring that SV continues to nurture students and encourage them to become productive citizens.
Operating a parochial school has become increasingly complex in recent decades. Transitioning to an independent model provides more resources for management and financial needs. At St. Vincent, this includes various fundraising efforts supported by the board, alumni, and the broader community.
This year’s fundraising initiatives have been successful, putting the school on track to meet its goals. SV is a valuable resource in Sonoma and Marin counties, and this fresh start offers a solid foundation for growth. Lichty noted, "The sizable donations and other support make it clear how passionate our community is about the value that SV brings."
Leadership and Community Support
Principal Mike Casper will officially begin his role on July 1st. Born and raised in Marin County, Casper attended St. Isabella School and Marin Catholic. He has had a long career with the Novato Unified School District and Marin Office of Education. Casper is an experienced educator who understands parochial education.
"SV has gone through changes over the past year, but student registration continues to climb as demand for our services remains high," said Casper. "I want to thank our board and generous alumni for their continued support."
Jack Ellis, a student from Novato and member of SV’s 2023 state champion football team, shared his enthusiasm: "I'm excited about the future for SV. Throughout my years here, I've felt very supported to do my best while supporting others to do the same."
Commitment to Faith-Based Education
SVDP will now operate as an independent Catholic school approved by the Diocese of Santa Rosa. The commitment to a faith-based experience framed by Catholic social teachings remains a cornerstone of the curriculum. Students will continue to celebrate mass at St. Vincent de Paul, maintaining a valuable partnership with St. Vincent de Paul Elementary School.
