Sorrento Roads By 1000 Miglia 2024: Classic Cars And Campania's Charm
Sorrento, 7 April 2024 - The Sorrento Roads event, a highlight in the world of motor racing, once again captured the imagination of enthusiasts and spectators alike with its blend of competitive spirit and breathtaking scenery. Nestled among the cliffs, lemon groves, and vibrant houses of the Amalfi Coast, this year's event offered participants a unique opportunity to navigate through some of Campania's most picturesque landscapes, including the ports of Maiori and Marina d'Arechi, under the clear skies and bright sunshine that define this region.
Following Thursday's technical and administrative checks at Villa Fiorentino, the heart of Sorrento and home to the Sorrento Foundation, Friday saw 30 crews embarking on a 210-kilometre regularity race. The race not only tested their precision and skill but also allowed them to immerse themselves in the authentic beauty and culture of Campania. Alfonso Facchini and Luigia Olivetti, driving a 1938 B.M.W 238, clinched victory for the third consecutive year. They were closely followed by two 1955 Porsche 356s, securing second and third places respectively.
The event also offered moments of leisure and cultural enrichment. Participants enjoyed a lunch in Capaccio featuring local dairy delights and explored the UNESCO heritage site of Paestum with their cars elegantly framing the ancient Greco-Roman ruins. This blend of competition and cultural exploration underscored the event's unique appeal.
The conclusion in Sorrento was met with enthusiasm from both participants and spectators. The historic cars were displayed at Villa Fiorentino, where a popular jury voted for the best design and style. The 1959 Mercedes Benz 300 S Roadster took home awards in both categories for historic cars built before 1980. In the post-1980s category, a 2006 Lamborghini Gallardo won for best design, while a 2008 Ferrari California was recognized for its style.
The event wrapped up with the thrilling Trofeo Città di Sorrento, a knockout regularity challenge that saw the Fiorentini-Ceci duo in a 1972 Porsche 911 T Targa emerge victorious. This final activity highlighted the competitive spirit that defines Sorrento Roads, leaving participants and spectators eagerly anticipating next year's edition.
