Škoda Auto Brews Innovation With ‘Curiosity Fuel’ Coffee For Sustainability
In a notable move towards sustainability, Škoda Auto, the Czech Republic-based car manufacturer, has launched its unique brand of coffee, Curiosity Fuel, across its plants. This initiative is not just about offering a new coffee blend but is deeply rooted in promoting sustainable practices and social responsibility. Curiosity Fuel is produced in alignment with the Rainforest Alliance principles, ensuring that every cup poured supports ecological and social responsibility.
The coffee beans are sourced from family-owned farms in India and Tanzania, emphasizing the preservation of biodiversity and the fair treatment and wages of workers. Škoda Auto's commitment extends beyond just sourcing sustainable coffee; the company has also pledged to support a school near the plantations in India to enhance infrastructure, showcasing its role as a socially and economically responsible employer.

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with project partners Jablum Czech and Neralu Plantation Private Limited to adhere to Rainforest Alliance Certification standards. This step underscores Škoda's holistic approach to sustainability, focusing on minimizing environmental footprints and promoting circular economy principles.
One innovative aspect of this initiative is the utilization of coffee bean husks from Curiosity Fuel. These husks, which are typically discarded as waste, are being used to tan the leather seats of Škoda's Kodiaq and Octavia models. This not only conserves resources but also highlights the company's exploration of other sustainable tanning solutions, such as using wastewater from olive oil processing.
The processing of Curiosity Fuel's coffee beans takes place at the Jablum family roastery in Bezděčín, Mladá Boleslav, upon their arrival in the Czech Republic. Distribution of this sustainably sourced coffee to canteens, company cafés, and coffee machines at Škoda's Czech plants has commenced. Starting this summer, Škoda plans to cover its total annual coffee consumption at these locations, approximately 25 tonnes, with Curiosity Fuel.
