What Are The Top Passports In The World As Of 2024?
Singapore's passport, distinguished by its red exterior and purple interior, now grants access to 195 destinations without a visa. This achievement has earned it the title of the world's most powerful travel document in a recent quarterly ranking.
The Henley Passport Index, developed by London-based Henley & Partners, has been monitoring global travel freedoms for 19 years. Using exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), it tracks passport power across 227 countries and territories.
Global Passport Rankings
Japan, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain share the second spot on the list. Citizens of these countries can travel visa-free to 192 destinations. Following closely are South Korea, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Ireland, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands at third place with access to 191 destinations.
The UK ranks fourth alongside New Zealand, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, and Switzerland. These countries' passports allow visa-free entry to 190 destinations. Australia and Portugal hold fifth place with access to 189 destinations each.
US Passport Decline
The United States has slipped to eighth place with visa-free access to 186 destinations. This is a notable drop from its previous top position shared with the UK in 2014.
At the lower end of the spectrum is Afghanistan. Its passport allows visa-free travel to only 26 countries, marking the lowest score in nearly two decades of the index's history.
African Mobility Challenges
Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote highlighted mobility issues within Africa at the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali. He mentioned needing 35 visas for intra-continental travel compared to fewer requirements for European visitors.
Research by Mehari Taddele Maru revealed that African applicants face higher Schengen visa rejection rates—around 30% compared to about 10% globally. Maru stated that this reflects a bias against African applicants who experience lower passport power and limited economic mobility.
Multiple Passport Indexes
Henley & Partners' index is one among several created by financial firms to rank global passports based on their accessibility. Arton Capital's Passport Index includes passports from 193 UN member countries and six territories like Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Arton Capital updates its index in real-time using government portals. According to Arton Capital's founder Armand Arton, it aims to provide accurate information for travellers' needs. Their Global Passport Power Rank for 2024 places the UAE at the top with a score of 179.
