Empowering Singapore's Disadvantaged Kids Through Digital Bootcamp Hackathon

In a significant step towards bridging the digital divide, around 200 primary school students from lower-income families in Singapore's Central District have successfully completed their first hackathon. This event was part of the third installment of 'My Digital Bootcamp', a series designed to empower children with essential 21st-century skills. Under the watchful eyes of sustainability experts, these young minds, aged between 9 and 12, tackled climate-related issues by crafting innovative solutions through IT skills and the use of upcycled materials.

Mayor Denise Phua, alongside UOB’s Mr. Leonard Tan, engaged with participants, highlighting the community's investment in high-quality programs aimed at making children from disadvantaged backgrounds future-ready. Emphasizing the critical nature of climate change, Ms. Phua described the initiative as a crucial step towards lifelong learning and skill development. This initiative falls under the umbrella of Central Singapore CDC's SkillsFuture Junior movement, which aligns with the national SkillsFuture efforts to equip Singaporeans with future-relevant skills.

UOB has played a pivotal role in supporting 'My Digital Bootcamp', contributing $1.5 million over three seasons, with $500,000 dedicated to Season 3 alone. More than 30 UOB employee volunteers contributed their time and effort to mentor students, distribute participation kits and meals, and facilitate their learning journey. Mr. Leonard Tan expressed pride in UOB's commitment to nurturing young talents and equipping them with digital competencies necessary for thriving in a digital-centric world.

The hackathon challenged students to develop solutions across four categories: creating linguistic devices, designing smart homes for individuals with disabilities, developing AI for waste management, and crafting games to aid refugees during tough times. Trainer-mentor Mohd Faisal bin Ali shared his experience working with these young innovators. Having mentored students for nearly a decade, he praised their quick learning abilities and inquisitive nature, which he believes sets them above average.

This year-long effort culminated in a hackathon that not only showcased the students' ability to apply AI in addressing real-world challenges but also underscored the importance of digital literacy and innovation in today's society. The success of 'My Digital Bootcamp' underscores the collective commitment of various stakeholders towards equipping the next generation with the tools and knowledge to navigate and contribute positively to an increasingly digital future.
