Safari Rally Kenya 2024: The Ultimate Motorsport Challenge In Africa's Heart
This week marks a significant moment for motorsport enthusiasts as the Safari Rally Kenya gears up to present one of the most challenging competitions since its return to the FIA World Rally Championship calendar three years ago. After a six-week hiatus following the Swedish rally's sub-zero challenges, drivers and teams are now set to tackle the diverse terrains of Africa from 28 to 31 March.
The Safari Rally has been strategically rescheduled to March, aligning with Kenya's rainy season, which has already made some of the roads tricky during the reconnaissance. The vehicles are equipped with snorkels to navigate through potentially flooded sections, highlighting the unique challenges of this rally. Toyota Gazoo Racing, with its GR Yaris Rally1 team, is under the spotlight, having dominated every edition since 2021. Despite their impressive record, they are yet to secure a win this season, placing additional pressure on drivers Elfyn Evans, Takamoto Katsuta, and reigning world champion Kalle Rovanperä.

Hyundai Motorsport is poised to challenge Toyota's dominance in Africa. With its i20 N drivers Thierry Neuville, Ott Tänak, and Esapekka Lappi, Hyundai aims to build on its recent successes. Neuville leads the drivers' championship by three points over Evans, while Lappi is coming off a victory in Sweden. Meanwhile, M-Sport Ford is entering the rally with confidence after Adrien Fourmaux's podium finish in Sweden. The team is fielding Puma Rally1 cars for Fourmaux, Grégoire Munster, and Jourdan Serderidis.
The rally kicks off in Nairobi on Thursday lunchtime and will cover 19 demanding special stages around Lakes Naivasha and Elmenteita, spanning 367.76km before concluding on Sunday afternoon in Naivasha. This event not only tests the resilience and skill of the participants but also offers a spectacular backdrop of plains and vibrant wildlife, making it a unique stop in the World Rally Championship.
