Mark Rothko's Seagram Murals To Be Showcased At Tate St Ives For The First Time
On Wednesday, March 13, 2024, an exciting announcement was made regarding the display of Mark Rothko's esteemed "Seagram Murals" at Tate St Ives. This marks a significant moment as it will be the first time five of these influential works will be exhibited at the venue, starting from May 25, 2024. The "Seagram Murals," known for their profound emotional depth and shift towards darker color palettes, were originally commissioned for the Four Seasons restaurant in New York's Seagram building but were later donated to Tate in 1969 by Rothko himself.
Rothko's journey with these murals took a pivotal turn during a break in 1959 when he visited St Ives, a burgeoning artists' community, and met with notable modernist painters. This visit influenced his decision to withdraw the murals from their intended commercial setting, believing that such a space did not align with the immersive experience he wished to create for viewers. His decision to donate these works to Tate has allowed them to be appreciated in environments more fitting to his vision.

The upcoming display at Tate St Ives not only brings these iconic pieces closer to the place that played a role in their history but also coincides with the major summer exhibition of Beatriz Milhazes: Maresias. Giles Jackson, Assistant Curator at Tate St Ives, curates this significant exhibition. The "Seagram Murals" will be presented in accordance with Rothko's specific instructions regarding hanging height, lighting, and wall color to ensure viewers can fully engage with the works as intended.
The exhibition "Mark Rothko: The Seagram Murals" is set to run from May 25, 2024, until January 5, 2025, at Tate St Ives, located on Porthmeor Beach. The gallery will welcome visitors daily from 10:00 to 17:20. Tickets are available for purchase on Tate's official website or by calling +44(0)20 7887 8888. Admission is free for members.
Tate St Ives has been a pivotal institution in exploring the region's contribution to modern art since its opening in 1993 and its expansion in 2017. It not only showcases contemporary artists from around the globe but also runs a dedicated Artist Residency programme. Its commitment to integrating with the local community and promoting modern art was recognized when it was awarded Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2018.
This upcoming exhibition offers an unparalleled opportunity for both art enthusiasts and the general public to experience Rothko's "Seagram Murals" in a setting that reflects the artist's original intentions and connects with the rich artistic heritage of St Ives.
