NASCAR Legend Richard Petty To Showcase Iconic Superbird At Festival Of Speed
NASCAR icon Richard Petty is set to grace the Festival of Speed this July, bringing with him the legendary 1970 Plymouth Superbird. This appearance is particularly special as it commemorates 75 years since the Petty family first dipped their toes into motorsport. The journey began with Lee Petty, Richard's father, who made his NASCAR debut in 1949. Richard Petty, often referred to as "The King" of NASCAR, boasts an illustrious career that spanned over three decades, from the late 1950s to the early 1990s.
Throughout his career, Petty not only raced but also left an indelible mark on the sport. He was the first driver to clinch the NASCAR Cup Series championship seven times and secured a record 200 race wins, including seven victories at the Daytona 500. Following his retirement from racing, Petty continued to contribute to NASCAR, taking on roles as a team owner and sport ambassador. His attendance at the Festival of Speed, alongside his son Kyle Petty who will pilot the Superbird, is a nod to his significant contributions and achievements in motorsport.
The Festival of Speed will host a 'Balcony Moment' outside Goodwood House, dedicated to celebrating Petty's remarkable career. Unfortunately for many fans, tickets for Friday through Sunday have already sold out, though Thursday tickets remain available. The event, sponsored by Mastercard, a leading global technology company in the payments industry, is scheduled from July 11th to July 14th at Goodwood. In addition to the races and showcases, hospitality packages are being offered for an enhanced experience at the festival.
This year's Festival of Speed not only serves as a platform for showcasing automotive excellence but also as a tribute to one of NASCAR's most enduring legacies. Richard Petty's presence, along with the iconic Superbird and the involvement of his son Kyle, underscores the deep familial ties and rich history that have propelled motorsport forward over the past 75 years.
