Residents Evacuate Akuseki Island After 5.5 Magnitude Earthquake In Japan

On Friday, following a series of tremors over two weeks, a significant earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 struck a remote island in southwestern Japan, leading to the evacuation of about a dozen residents.

This event occurred in the wake of a considerably strong earthquake that shook Akuseki Island, part of the Tokara island chain in Kagoshima Prefecture, on Thursday afternoon. The earthquake registered at the lower 6 on Japan's seismic intensity scale of 7, a level indicating potential difficulty in maintaining one's footing and possible structural damage.

The local weather agency has characterised a quake hitting the lower 6 mark on the scale as one that might make standing a challenge, and could cause harm to parts of buildings such as tiles and windows.

Following Friday morning's tremors, which reached up to a 4 on the seismic scale, thirteen individuals, comprising both children and the elderly, evacuated the island. They were assisted by the village of Toshima, which oversees the island, providing a ferry for their departure. This response underscores the community's efforts to ensure the safety of its members amid the ongoing seismic activity.

Officials from the village have expressed concern that the number of evacuees may increase, as some residents might not have managed to arrange passage on the ferry in time. This statement highlights the ongoing uncertainty and potential for further displacement caused by the quakes.

The Tokara island chain, an area now familiar with seismic disturbances, has experienced over 1,000 noticeable earthquakes since June 21, 2025. This figure was provided by a local meteorological observatory, which also recorded quakes hitting the lower 5 on the scale earlier in the week. The frequent and varied intensity of these quakes signals a worrying trend of geological instability in the region.

Akuseki Island, where the recent seismic activities have been concentrated, had all 76 of its residents confirmed safe following the initial shock. Kyodo News reported this reassurance, highlighting the community's swift action in ensuring the well-being of its people amidst the natural threat.

The pattern of earthquakes in this region, including those on Monday and Wednesday, which also registered in the lower 5 range on the seismic scale, points to a persistent geological upheaval. The community's ongoing response, including the evacuation and confirmation of residents' safety, reflects a measured approach to a potentially volatile situation.
