Regina Transit To Enhance Rider Experience With Cubic's Umo Fare Collection System
Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS), a division of Cubic Corporation, has recently announced a significant development in the public transportation sector of Canada. Regina Transit has chosen the Umo Platform for its innovative fare collection system, marking a significant step towards modernizing the rider experience with account-based ticketing and contactless payment options. This collaboration underscores Cubic's expanding influence across Canada as it continues to offer fare system support to transit agencies throughout the nation.
Starting in late summer 2024, Regina Transit passengers will be introduced to a new level of convenience. They will have the flexibility to pay fares using the Umo Mobility smartphone application, open loop cards like debit and credit cards directly on buses, or through a reloadable smartcard. This initiative is set to replace the existing R-Card system, enhancing the payment process for riders.

Nathan Luhning, acting director of transit and fleet at Regina Transit, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. "We are proud to announce that the City of Regina is taking action to provide its residents with the best travel experience possible," he stated. Luhning highlighted Cubic's proven track record in deploying similar systems in major Canadian cities such as Vancouver and Victoria, expressing confidence in Cubic's ability to meet Regina's needs effectively.
The adoption of the Umo Platform introduces two innovative features to Regina Transit riders: open payments and fare capping. Open payments allow riders to use their preferred payment method, including bank media like credit and debit cards. Fare capping promotes transit equity by enabling the City of Regina to set a fixed fare limit for a certain period, encouraging riders to use transit services more frequently without worrying about the cost of multiple trips.
Matt Newsome, SVP and GM at Cubic Transportation Systems, shared his excitement about the partnership. "Cubic is delighted to partner with the City of Regina to enhance the transit journey with the versatility and ease of Umo," he said. Newsome emphasized that the Umo platform aims to provide seamless and fair access to transit for everyone, extending these benefits to another province in western Canada.
For those who prefer using cash, adding funds to their Umo account remains straightforward. Riders can top up their accounts at retail partners or directly through the Umo app or web portal using credit or debit cards. Moreover, Cubic will equip all fixed-route buses with new cash fareboxes, catering to passengers who opt for cash payments onboard.
This collaboration between Cubic Transportation Systems and Regina Transit signifies a forward-thinking approach to public transportation, aiming to improve accessibility, convenience, and equity for all riders in Regina.
