Private Sector Spearheads Sustainability: The Sustainable Markets Initiative's 2023 Impact Report
The Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) has recently unveiled its 2023 Impact Report, aptly named "The Growth Story of Our Time." This document not only charts the organization's expansion but also casts a spotlight on its numerous projects and initiatives aimed at fostering a more sustainable economy. A key theme of the report is the pivotal role of the private sector in this endeavor, with SMI's efforts being showcased through various channels such as industry and finance Task Forces, Regional and Country Councils, and global engagement strategies. Notably, SMI has achieved a significant milestone by being appointed as the strategic partner to the Business and Philanthropy Climate Forum, marking it as the inaugural private sector forum to join the official COP Presidency Programme.
Brian Moynihan, who holds dual roles as Chair and CEO of Bank of America and Chair of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, underscores the private sector's capacity to spearhead sustainability efforts. Moynihan elaborates on how SMI collaborates with enterprises across the spectrum to introduce clean technologies, allocate capital towards innovation, and enhance transparency. He further stresses the importance of collaboration across Task Forces to quicken progress and underscores the private sector's crucial role in partnering with public entities at sustainability-focused global forums.

Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, CEO of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, echoes this sentiment by highlighting the private sector's leadership in steering towards a sustainable future. She points out that CEOs within the organization are acting as key agents in shifting towards value creation that places Nature, People, and Planet at its core. The report is in line with the vision set forth by its founder, His Majesty King Charles III, who initiated the Sustainable Markets Initiative in 2020.
Among its notable achievements in 2023, SMI has made strides in driving industry and finance transition via its 22 Task Forces. It has also initiated Regional and Country Councils to foster collective action and established the Africa Council to bolster sustainability efforts on the continent. Another significant milestone is the launch of the Astra Carta—a roadmap for private sector leadership on sustainability in space. Additionally, SMI has acknowledged companies leading towards a climate and Nature-positive future through the Terra Carta Seal Awards and expanded its Terra Carta Design Lab by partnering with design schools to nurture sustainability-focused ideas.
Founded by His Majesty King Charles III, SMI has emerged as a prominent private sector entity focused on transition. The Terra Carta, introduced in 2021, acts as the organization's mandate for propelling positive outcomes for Nature, People, and Planet through actionable steps in the real economy.
