Primetals Technologies To Modernize Millstand Drives At SSAB's Finland Facility

In a significant move towards modernization, SSAB Hameenlinna has announced a follow-up order with Primetals Technologies for the upgrade of millstands at its cold rolling mill located in Hameenlinna, Finland. This decision comes after the successful completion of the initial phase of modernization, which saw an overhaul of stand No. 1's drive system to align with the most modern standards.

The comprehensive upgrade, which is set to be fully implemented by May 2026, marks a continuation of SSAB's efforts to enhance its production capabilities. The project encompasses Phases 3 to 5 of the millstand drive modernization, following the successful execution and final acceptance certificate (FAC) received for Phase 2 in late 2023.

Millstand Drives Upgrade in Finland

Primetals Technologies' role in this extensive modernization project began in early Spring 2023 with the implementation of millstand drives for stand No. 1. The project's success led to the immediate placement of a follow-up order by SSAB, underlining the seamless integration of new systems with existing ones and the close partnership between SSAB Hameenlinna and Primetals Technologies.

The upcoming phases will see the modernization of transformers, drives, and motors for the remaining mill stands in a manner similar to the earlier phases. Additionally, an obsolete motor will be refurbished in Phase 5 to serve as a replacement for other already modernized motors. This strategic upgrade aims not only to secure the supply of spare parts for the millstand drives but also to increase the availability of the tandem cold rolling mill.

SSAB Hameenlinna, established in 1972, is a key player in the steel industry, employing around 1,000 individuals. The facility's 4-stand tandem cold rolling mill produces coils ranging from 660 to 1,575 millimeters in width at thicknesses between 0.35 to 3.1 millimeters. The products manufactured at Hameenlinna find applications across various sectors including automotive, construction, and household appliance manufacturing, particularly in creating ultra-high-strength safety structures for cars.

Primetals Technologies, Limited, headquartered in London, UK, stands as a global leader in engineering, plant building, and providing lifecycle services for the metals industry. As part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, Primetals Technologies boasts around 7,000 employees worldwide and offers a comprehensive portfolio covering every step of the iron and steel production chain.
