Wushan County's Plum Blossom Festival Draws Tourists To Yangtze River

In the heart of China's Chongqing Municipality, Wushan County unfolds its scenic beauty along the Yangtze River, captivating visitors with its annual spectacle. The sixth Three Gorges (Wushan) Plum Flower Festival commenced on March 12, showcasing the region's enchanting plum blossoms and aiming to draw tourists to the Three Gorges' breathtaking landscapes. Nestled in the hinterland of the Three Gorges and straddling the Yangtze River, Wushan County serves as a pivotal point for Chongqing's interactions with eastern regions and is a gateway to the renowned Three Gorges.

The tradition of cultivating Wushan crisp plum dates back over a millennium to the Tang and Song dynasties. Currently, the cultivation spans 300,000 mu (approximately 20,000 hectares), with altitudes ranging from 175 meters to 800 meters. The plum blossoms, peaking from mid-March to mid-April, blanket the mountains in what appears to be snow, offering a stunning visual feast along the riverbanks.

Wushan County has been proactive in leveraging its natural resources, notably by advancing its crisp plum industry. Efforts in variety breeding and technical enhancements have positioned Wushan as a leading hub for crisp plum production in China. Beyond plums, Wushan has embarked on an ambitious land greening initiative aimed at planting red-leaf tree species along the Yangtze River. This initiative not only revitalizes the local ecosystem but also enhances the continuity and density of red-leaf trees in the area. The Wushan International Red Leaf Festival, now in its 17th year, plays a significant role in highlighting the region's ecological progress.

Infrastructure development has been a key focus for Wushan County, establishing it as an integrated transportation hub within east Chongqing. The hub includes an airport, high-speed railway connections, navigable waterways along the Yangtze River, multiple expressways, and a tourism loop route. Wushan Airport currently operates 10 routes, and the Zhengzhou-Chongqing high-speed trains make 43 daily stops at Wushan station. This robust transportation network ensures that visitors can easily access Wushan and enjoy both swift travel and leisurely exploration.

The Plum Flower Festival not only celebrates the natural beauty of Wushan but also underscores the county's commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable tourism development.
