Pirelli Braces For Weather Challenges At Safari Rally With Soft Scorpion Tyres As Prime Choice

Milan – In a strategic move that underscores the unpredictable nature of rally racing, the Safari Kenya Rally, scheduled for the end of March 2024, has once again selected the soft compound gravel tyre as the prime choice for competitors. This decision marks the third consecutive year that this tyre specification has been chosen for what is known as one of the most challenging rallies on the calendar. The event, returning to its traditional March slot, introduces an increased chance of rainfall, adding another layer of complexity to the competition.

The Safari Kenya Rally, celebrated as the first gravel rally of the season and the third round overall, is notorious for its unpredictable conditions. The shift to a March date heightens anticipation around weather-related challenges, particularly rain, which could exacerbate the already difficult conditions with deeper ruts and heightened risks from rocks. Despite these concerns, current weather forecasts predict rainfall mainly in the afternoon, potentially mitigating the feared impact on the rally's course.

Pirelli's Strategy for Safari Rally

The selection of Pirelli's soft compound Scorpion KX WRC SA tyres underscores their proven reliability and performance in Kenya's demanding conditions. These tyres have been unanimously chosen by drivers in past editions for their resilience and ability to navigate through slippery surfaces, rocks, bumps, and deep ruts. The unique challenges of the African rally landscape, including the notorious 'fesh fesh' fine sand, demand tyres that prioritize durability over outright performance.

In light of potential worst-case scenarios involving rain and muddy conditions, the Scorpion KX WRC SA remains the preferred choice. Its design focuses on providing optimal grip in slippery and wet conditions without compromising on durability. For more abrasive surfaces and longer stages, drivers have the option to select the hard compound Scorpion KX WRC HA tyres. Regulations permit an allocation of 28 prime tyres and 8 option tyres per crew, with flexibility to adjust this allocation based on strategic needs.

Rally2 and Rally3 categories also have specific tyre options available to them, with allocations set at 26 prime tyres and 8 option tyres. This allows teams in these categories to tailor their tyre strategies to best suit their vehicles' needs and the challenging Kenyan terrain.

Terenzio Testoni, Pirelli Rally activity manager, highlighted the versatility and strategic importance of selecting the right tyre for the Safari Rally. "The Scorpion SA tyres have consistently demonstrated their ability to balance grip with impact resistance," Testoni noted. He emphasized that drivers must approach the Safari Rally with an endurance mindset, focusing on navigating through its unique challenges rather than prioritizing speed.

This strategic tyre selection reflects a deep understanding of the Safari Kenya Rally's demands and showcases Pirelli's commitment to supporting drivers through one of the calendar's most unpredictable and challenging events.
