Pirelli Unveils New Tyres For WorldSBK Barcelona Event, Aiming For Better Stability
As the FIM Superbike World Championship gears up for its first European round of the season at the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit, riders are set to benefit from new tyre developments introduced by Pirelli. Following extensive testing, including sessions held last Thursday and Friday, two innovative tyre solutions will be available for the WorldSBK class: an evolved SC1 front tyre and a new SCX rear tyre.
The Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit, nestled in the municipality of Montmeló, is poised to host the second round of the championship. This follows an engaging season opener in Australia. The new tyre options include a front tyre, designated as specification C0516, which is an evolution of the standard SC1 aiming for enhanced stability without altering the compound. This tyre has already been tested by riders in early season trials and during last week's sessions at this very circuit.

The rear tyre introduces a significant development with the SCX, evolving from the B0800 model widely utilized last year. The new C0900 specification aims to boost both stability and performance through adjustments in compound and structure. This "super soft" development made its debut in last week's testing and is now also available for competition.
Giorgio Barbier, Motorcycle Racing Director, highlighted Barcelona's suitability for introducing new tyres. He noted the circuit's demanding nature as an excellent testbed for identifying any potential weaknesses in tyre solutions. The development front SC1 has received positive feedback during initial 2024 tests and last week's sessions, making it a natural addition to the race allocation. Although less data is available on the new C0900 rear, early tests suggest it follows successfully in the footsteps of its predecessor, the B0800.
In addition to the newly introduced tyres, WorldSBK riders will have access to standard SC1 and SC2 front tyres and SCX and SC0 rear tyres, along with the SCQ designated for Superpole and Superpole Race. The WorldSSP class will have a choice between SC1 and SC2 for the front and SCX and SC0 for the rear.
During last week's testing, WorldSBK riders consistently achieved lap times comparable to or better than the best race lap times of 2023, even breaking the all-time lap record. With similar weather conditions expected during the race weekend, further improvements in lap times are anticipated as track conditions enhance and teams refine their setups.
Weather Considerations and Young Talent
The championship's March visit to Montmeló introduces potential weather uncertainties that could affect race preparations. However, insights from recent tests are expected to aid teams in optimizing their setups to ensure optimal tyre performance.
The Catalan round will also mark the beginning of the season for emerging talents participating in the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship and the R3 bLU cRU FIM World Cup, with Pirelli continuing its role as sole tyre supplier since 2017.
This weekend promises not only a showcase of advanced tyre technology but also a platform for young riders to make their mark on an international stage. As teams and riders adapt to new developments and navigate potential weather challenges, all eyes will be on Montmeló for what promises to be a thrilling chapter in the 2024 Superbike World Championship.
