Pinterest Debuts Body Type Ranges To Foster Inclusivity In Fashion And Wedding Searches
Pinterest has announced the launch of an innovative tool named body type ranges, aimed at enhancing the inclusivity of its platform. This feature allows users to tailor their search results according to different body types, specifically in the categories of women's fashion and wedding ideas. The introduction of this tool marks a significant step towards creating a more inclusive online environment where users can find inspiration that resonates with their personal identity.
The body type ranges feature is designed to empower Pinterest users by providing them with the option to select from four distinct body type categories. This customization ensures that the search results more accurately reflect the user's self-perception. Pinterest plans to extend this feature to include men's fashion and will continue to expand its availability across different verticals and international markets progressively throughout the year.

At the core of this initiative is Pinterest's commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for creating additive experiences rather than addictive ones. The technology behind body type ranges is based on Pinterest's patent-pending body type technology, which analyzes over 3.5 billion images on the platform to identify a variety of body shapes, sizes, and forms.
Sabrina Ellis, Chief Product Officer at Pinterest, emphasized the importance of representation on the platform. "Pinterest is a visual discovery platform and we want users to be able to see themselves reflected in their search results," she stated. The company has observed that users who engage with the body type ranges feature exhibit a 66% higher engagement rate per session compared to those who do not use it.
Pinterest's research indicates a strong desire among its users for diverse content, which is further supported by the platform's inclusive tools like skin tone ranges and hair pattern search. With nearly half a billion people visiting Pinterest monthly for inspiration, the company is dedicated to reflecting the diversity of its global audience.
Since 2018, Pinterest has positioned itself as a leader in promoting inclusive experiences through its product offerings. The launch of body type ranges will also see Pinterest featuring size-inclusive brands on its search landing page, showcasing curated shoppable content from brands such as Eloquii, Ganni, Mara Hoffman, Osei Duro, Gia / Irl, among others.
To utilize the body type ranges feature, users can simply open the Pinterest app, select the search icon, type their query (e.g., "autumn outfits"), and then choose their preferred body types at the top of the search results. Additionally, Pinterest offers an option to save one's body type selection on their device for similar future searches.
Currently available in the US and under testing in Canada, the body type ranges for women's fashion and wedding-related content searches are set to broaden their reach. This initiative underscores Pinterest's ongoing efforts to create an online space that celebrates and accommodates diversity.
