Petersen Museum Unveils 'Eyes On The Road' Exhibit With Art By Warhol And Ruscha
The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is set to unveil its latest exhibit, "Eyes on the Road: Art of the Automotive Landscape," on March 30, 2024. This unique display aims to delve into the symbiotic relationship between art, the automotive world, and technological innovation. It will feature an impressive array of concept cars alongside artwork from legendary figures such as Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol, and David Hockney.
Spanning across five distinct sections—vehicle concepts, sign language, at the pump, highways, and street art—the exhibit offers a comprehensive look at how artists and designers have reimagined the everyday motoring landscape into something extraordinary. From rare concept vehicles of the 1930s and 1950s to contemporary interpretations of road signage and gas stations, each piece tells a story of creativity and transformation.

Among the highlights are the 1934 Dymaxion, the 1956 American Motors Astra-Gnome, the 1955 Ghia Gilda, and the 1969 Chevrolet Astro III. These vehicles represent some of the most imaginative designs that never reached mass production but have continued to inspire automotive enthusiasts and designers alike.
In addition to these automotive marvels, visitors will be treated to iconic art pieces such as Hockney’s "Mulholland Drive" (1986), Warhol’s "Mobil Gas" (1985), and Ruscha’s "Standard Station" (1966). Each work captures a unique aspect of the automotive experience, from the allure of the open road to the cultural significance of car culture in America.
Terry L. Karges, Executive Director of the Petersen Automotive Museum, expressed his enthusiasm for the exhibit: "This exhibit represents the fusion of artistic expression, automotive ingenuity and observation of the motoring environment. It also perfectly illustrates how artists can reveal the beauty hidden in plain sight throughout the world in which we drive."
Curated by the Petersen Automotive Museum and guest curator Jim Farber, "Eyes On the Road: Art of the Automotive Landscape" will be housed in the Armand Hammer Foundation Gallery until November 2024. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, March 29, with tickets available for purchase now. For more details on this captivating exhibit or to secure your tickets, visit Petersen.org/exhibits.
