Pete Distad Takes Helm As CEO Of ESPN, FOX And Warner Bros. Discovery's New Sports Streaming Service
Pete Distad, a seasoned executive with a rich background in media, sports, and technology, has been appointed as the CEO of a novel sports streaming service. This service is a collaborative effort by industry giants ESPN, FOX, and Warner Bros. Discovery. With an impressive career trajectory that includes significant roles at Apple and Hulu, Distad brings a wealth of experience to the table. His tenure at Apple spanned a decade, culminating in 2023, where he played a pivotal role in the business, operations, and global distribution for Video, Sports, and Apple TV+. Notably, Distad was instrumental in launching the new Apple TV in 2015 and was a key figure behind the introduction and expansion of the Apple TV app, Apple TV+, and MLS Season Pass.
Before his impactful stint at Apple, Distad was a part of Hulu from 2007 to 2013, where he held the position of Senior Vice President of Marketing and Distribution. His contributions were crucial to Hulu's initial launch, overseeing aspects such as customer acquisition and retention, distribution, and marketing. Distad's career also includes valuable experiences in technology and management consulting roles at McKinsey & Company, Calence (now Insight), and Andersen Consulting (now Accenture).

The joint venture aims to carve out a unique space in the sports streaming landscape by leveraging the combined sports content portfolios of ESPN, FOX, and Warner Bros. Discovery. This initiative seeks to cater to passionate sports fans in the US who are looking for alternatives outside the traditional pay TV bundle. The companies have expressed their confidence in Distad's leadership and innovation capabilities to create a fan-focused product that stands out in the market.
The upcoming platform is set to launch in the fall of 2024 and promises to offer an extensive lineup of sports content directly to consumers through a new app. This initiative represents a significant move towards aggregating content from major professional sports leagues and college sports into a single service. Subscribers will have the option to bundle this service with other popular streaming platforms such as Disney+, Hulu, and/or Max.
The service aims to provide an all-in-one premier sports experience by including access to linear sports networks like ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, ESPNEWS, ABC, FOX, FS1, FS2, BTN, TNT, TBS, truTV, as well as ESPN+. While further details regarding pricing and additional staff are yet to be announced, the anticipation for this differentiated sports streaming experience continues to build among fans seeking alternatives outside the conventional pay TV offerings.
Distad's appointment marks an important milestone for the joint venture as it gears up for its official launch next year. With his extensive background in launching and scaling new video services, Distad is poised to lead this ambitious project towards becoming a leading destination for sports enthusiasts across the United States.
