Overlake Medical Enhances Patient Care With Innovative AI Tool, DAX Copilot

Overlake Medical Center & Clinics, a leading healthcare provider based in Bellevue, Washington, has taken a significant step towards enhancing patient care and operational efficiency by integrating an artificial intelligence (AI) tool into its clinical processes. The AI tool, known as Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX™) Copilot, is a product of Microsoft that leverages conversational, ambient, and generative AI technologies. This innovative solution is designed to automatically draft clinical notes during patient-provider interactions, thereby reducing the administrative workload on healthcare providers and allowing them more time to focus on patient care.

The DAX™ Copilot system operates by capturing the conversation between the patient and the provider in real-time. These conversations are then securely translated into clinical notes and integrated directly into Epic, Overlake’s electronic health record system. This seamless process not only eliminates the need for manual note-taking but also significantly reduces the after-clinic administrative tasks, often referred to as "pajama time." By alleviating this burden, Overlake aims to improve both the patient experience and provider satisfaction while also addressing the critical issue of professional burnout among healthcare providers.

AI Boosts Overlake Patient Care

Dr. Christy Chan, a family medicine physician at Overlake Clinics, highlighted the psychological benefits of using DAX™ Copilot. She noted that the tool significantly reduces the stress associated with remembering details and completing notes promptly. A nationwide survey among 1,000 clinicians who have used DAX technology supports Dr. Chan’s observations. The findings revealed that clinicians saved an average of 7 minutes per patient encounter on note-taking. Furthermore, 79% of respondents reported experiencing a better work-life balance, and 70% stated that the software helped reduce feelings of burnout and fatigue.

DAX Copilot is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 model and is enhanced by Microsoft Azure cloud capabilities. This combination not only ensures high accuracy in note-taking but also adheres to strict privacy standards, as certified by the Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST®). Scott Waters, Overlake’s chief information and technology officer, emphasized the organization's commitment to patient safety and privacy as paramount considerations in adopting new technologies.

By mid-May, Overlake plans to implement DAX Copilot technology across at least five clinics within its network. This initiative is part of Overlake Medical Center & Clinics' ongoing efforts to leverage technology for improving healthcare delivery. Established in 1960, Overlake Medical Center & Clinics serves the Eastside community with a 349-bed hospital and an extensive network of primary, urgent, and specialty care clinics throughout the region.
