OneH2 Launches New High-Pressure Tube Trailers To Streamline Hydrogen Transport

In a significant development for the hydrogen fuel industry, North Carolina-based OneH2, Inc. has announced the launch of its new cylinder technology designed for 931 bar high-pressure hydrogen tube trailers. This innovation represents a notable leap in the transportation of hydrogen gas, enabling more efficient and economical delivery to automotive and heavy vehicle applications requiring high-pressure fuel.

The technology, which has been under development for several years, operates under a special permit from the U.S. Department of Transport, allowing its use on public roads. Unlike the company's existing 520 bar hydrogen transport trailers, the new 931 bar design facilitates direct fills of 700 bar applications without the need for additional processing. This capability is expected to significantly reduce costs and improve reliability in hydrogen fuel transportation.

New Hydrogen Tube Trailers by OneH2

Nishanth Gorukanti, General Manager Operations & Maintenance at OneH2, expressed enthusiasm about the market introduction of these high-pressure tube trailers. "This system design will help to store larger quantities of gaseous hydrogen for transportation, thereby avoiding any use of onboard compression on the trailer or compression systems at the retail point of use," Gorukanti stated. The development team at OneH2, in collaboration with partners, has focused on delivering a system that is not only safe and reliable but also maximizes efficiency.

The trailers are comprised of multiple high-pressure cylinders, each capable of holding up to 27 kg (gross) of gaseous hydrogen at 931 bar pressure—nearly triple the capacity of OneH2's previous technology. Configurations vary, with a maximum capacity trailer holding up to 486 kg of automotive, fuel-cell grade hydrogen. For locations with limited space, smaller configurations are available to ensure better maneuverability.

To optimize the utilization of onboard hydrogen, OneH2 has incorporated a patented cascading function into the trailer design. This innovative feature allows each cylinder to act as its own cascading bank, minimizing the amount of inaccessible hydrogen gas left in storage cylinders. Additionally, the trailers are equipped with advanced features such as onboard hydrogen gas sensors, on-tank actuator valves for isolation, telemetry for on-road status reporting, safety interlocks, and a temperature and pressure relief device (TPRD) for each tank.

These cylinders are designed and tested according to international standards for type IV composite cylinders, ensuring their safety and reliability. Furthermore, OneH2 has extended this technology to its 931 bar Mobile Fuelers. These mobile refueling stations come equipped with an onboard dispensing system capable of handling both 350 bar and 700 bar pressures, transforming the trailer into a portable fueling station.

This mobile solution offers customers the flexibility to refuel vehicles at any location without significant investment in on-site equipment or dealing with permitting and construction challenges. As OneH2 continues to push forward with efficient hydrogen solutions, this technological advancement marks a significant step towards establishing an economically viable fueling infrastructure for the burgeoning hydrogen vehicle market.
