OceanX Sets Sail For Pioneering Exploration Of Southeast Asia's Marine Biodiversity

Global ocean exploration nonprofit OceanX has unveiled a comprehensive multi-year initiative aimed at enhancing ocean science and marine education across Southeast Asia, a region critically impacted by climate change. Utilizing Singapore as a pivotal hub, OceanX is set to launch a series of research expeditions aboard the OceanXplorer, heralded as the world's most sophisticated exploration, scientific research, and media production vessel.

The expedition's itinerary includes significant missions in Indonesia from May to August 2024 and in Malaysia during the second half of 2024. These missions are in collaboration with local government bodies and scientists, focusing on pivotal studies of the oceanic environment. The outcomes of these studies are expected to influence science, policy, and economic frameworks significantly.

OceanX's New Mission in Southeast Asia

Mark Dalio, Founder and co-CEO of OceanX, emphasized the critical biodiversity of Southeast Asia's marine ecosystems, many aspects of which remain unexplored. He highlighted the intrinsic connection between the region's island nations and the ocean, underscoring the importance of understanding and preserving these waters in the face of climate change challenges.

The OceanXplorer is equipped with an array of advanced technological tools designed for comprehensive marine environment surveys. This includes two 1,000 metre manned submersibles, a 6,000 metre remote operated vehicle (ROV), state-of-the-art research laboratories, next-generation DNA sequencing capabilities, full acoustic mapping capabilities, and conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) analysis.

In addition to its exploration efforts, OceanX Education plans to roll out new on-ship experiences and educational programs later this year. These initiatives are in partnership with universities and nonprofits throughout the region, aiming to cultivate a new generation of marine scientists, engineers, and storytellers.

Working closely with Dalio Philanthropies—a key founding member of the Temasek Trust's Philanthropy Asia Alliance—OceanX is poised to undertake numerous projects across Southeast Asia over the coming years. The organization is currently engaging with governments throughout the region to organize further expeditions.
