Norway To Host World's First Low Emission Ammonia Bunkering Terminal

The Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection has recently greenlit the establishment of an innovative ammonia bunkering facility in Florø, Norway. The terminal is designed as a floating stationary barge with the capacity to hold 1000 cubic meters of low-emission ammonia. It has been granted permission to conduct up to 416 operations each year, primarily focusing on the bunkering of offshore supply vessels. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by Yara Clean Ammonia and Azane to establish a network of terminals across Scandinavia. The goal is to cater to the increasing demand for ammonia as a shipping fuel and encourage ship operators and owners to transition from high-emission fuels to this cleaner alternative.

In support of this green transition, the Norwegian Climate and Energy fund, ENOVA, has announced plans to introduce ammonia grants for ships and related infrastructure in 2024.
