Film 'Gifts Of The Nile' Highlights Conservation And Community Efforts Along The Nile River

Today marks the debut of "Gifts of the Nile," a compelling film by Rivers are Life, set on the picturesque Qursaya Island in Cairo, Egypt. This documentary embarks on an enlightening journey with River Hero Alban De Ménonville and his team at VeryNile. Their mission? To tackle the pressing issue of plastic pollution in the Nile River. Through their efforts, they not only clean the river but also engage in community education and awareness about conserving our vital waterways.

The initiative began when it was observed that traditional fishing methods were being hindered by the increasing plastic waste in the river. VeryNile swiftly responded by launching the "Reviving Cairo Fishermen" project. This innovative approach employs local fishermen and women, leveraging their river expertise to aid in plastic removal. In return, they receive compensation above the average wage, thus cleaning the river at a grassroots level and providing additional income for the community.

Nile Conservation Efforts Showcased in New Film

The narrative further unfolds with artisan worker Loza Mahmoud and her husband, Hamed Aly Hamed, a fisherman. The couple, along with their three children, rely on the Nile for their livelihood. Despite focusing on net fishing, Hamed prioritizes removing plastic from the river, recognizing its persistent threat to their way of life. The collected plastic is then transported to sorting facilities operated by locals from VeryNile, where it is prepared for upcycling.

Salma Ellakany, a dedicated educator at VeryNile, plays a crucial role in teaching young people about conservation. Her efforts aim to inspire a new generation to champion sustainability and protect their local ecosystems. The project comes full circle as the removed plastic is transformed into vibrant textiles and home goods, creating opportunities for locals to thrive as artists and creators.

Alban De Ménonville shares, "We have 40 full-time people (artisans, plastic operators) and we are working with around 100 fishermen; so that’s a total of 140 local families benefiting directly from this project." He emphasizes how transforming a problem into opportunities can have a positive impact on communities and the health of the Nile River.

The premiere of "Gift of the Nile" on March 14, 2024, invites viewers to witness this inspiring story of community resilience and environmental stewardship. Watch "Gifts of the Nile" [HERE](#).
