Nikon Z 9 Firmware Version 5.00 Elevates Sports And Portrait Photography Capabilities

Nikon Corporation has recently unveiled firmware version 5.00 for its premier mirrorless camera, the Nikon Z 9, introducing a suite of enhancements aimed at elevating the photography experience for both sports and portrait enthusiasts. This update marks a significant step in Nikon's commitment to meeting the evolving needs of photographers by refining the camera's usability and expanding its capabilities.

The latest firmware introduces an Auto Capture function with a novel reserve feature, designed to allow photographers to pre-set the shooting start date/time and duration. This addition not only aids in planning shooting sessions but also contributes to battery conservation. To cater to diverse shooting scenarios, Nikon has incorporated the DX (24x16) image area and introduced an [Airplanes] AF subject-detection mode, thereby broadening the camera's versatility. The update also sees the inclusion of a low-speed [C15] item in the High-Speed Frame Capture+ options, enhancing continuous shooting usability. Furthermore, the introduction of frequency presets in the High-Frequency Flicker Reduction function simplifies the selection of optimal shutter speeds for reducing flicker effects in common LED lighting and signboards.

For portrait photography, the firmware update brings forth a Rich Tone Portrait Picture Control for crafting base images, alongside features such as Portrait Impression Balance and Skin Softening to refine overall portrait quality. Nikon continues to support portrait capture with its range of NIKKOR Z lenses, including the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S, NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S, and NIKKOR Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena. Additional convenience features include using the continuous LED light of the Profoto A10 as an AF-assist illuminator and a [Prefer focus point (face priority)] option for frame advance during image playback zoom.

Operability Enhancements Based on Professional Feedback

Reflecting Nikon's dedication to user feedback, several operability improvements have been integrated into this firmware update. Photographers can now manage shooting modes for photo and video separately with the [Extended menu banks] feature. Adjustments to the weight of the focus point border have been made for enhanced visibility. The update facilitates manual focusing with maximum aperture live view in manual focus mode and introduces an option to cancel zoom when focus mode is set to manual and the view is zoomed in. Enhancements to High-Res Zoom operability are included, along with a change in the AF-area brackets display color to green when subjects are in focus. Custom controls and functions can now be assigned and customized more efficiently, with a [Customize retouch options] item allowing users to select functions displayed in the retouch menu. Additionally, options for playback of images captured with continuous shooting and video playback speed have been added.

Connectivity Features

The firmware update extends its connectivity features by introducing Wi-Fi station mode for connection to SnapBridge without monopolizing the Wi-Fi connection on a smartphone. It also enables connection to the ATOMOS AirGlu accessory, UltraSync BLUE, via Bluetooth when the MC-N10 Remote Grip is attached to the camera.
