Nikon's Net-Zero Emission Targets Receive Approval From Science Based Targets Initiative
Tokyo-based Nikon Corporation has achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability journey. The company announced on Friday, March 22, 2024, that its ambitious targets for net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been officially approved by the Science Based Targets (SBT) initiative. This approval marks a critical step in Nikon's commitment to environmental stewardship and its efforts to combat climate change.
Nikon's dedication to reducing its environmental impact is reflected in its updated targets for GHG emissions reduction. By FY2050, the Nikon Group aims to reach net-zero GHG emissions across its entire value chain. This long-term goal aligns with the latest criteria set by the SBT initiative, emphasizing the urgency of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

In the near term, Nikon has set ambitious goals for FY2030. The company plans to reduce absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions by 57% from a FY2022 base year. Additionally, it aims to cut absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 25% from the same base year. These targets underscore Nikon's proactive approach to minimizing its carbon footprint and contributing to global efforts against climate change.
A pivotal element of Nikon's strategy is the accelerated transition to renewable energy. Originally planned for FY2050, Nikon now intends to switch to 100% renewable energy for electricity used in its business activities by FY2030. This bold move is expected to significantly contribute to the achievement of the company's GHG emissions reduction targets.
Commitment to Sustainability
Nikon's environmental initiatives are deeply rooted in its Corporate Philosophy of Trustworthiness and Creativity. The company strives to meet society's expectations by winning trust in environmental, social/labor, and governance areas. By creating new value through its business activities, Nikon aims to contribute to a sustainable society where humans and machines co-create seamlessly.
The SBT initiative, established in 2015 by entities including the United Nations Global Compact and the World Resources Institute (WRI), plays a crucial role in encouraging companies like Nikon to set science-based GHG reduction targets. Nikon's recent approval by this initiative underscores its commitment to playing a part in limiting global warming and fostering a sustainable future.
As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, Nikon's efforts exemplify how corporations can take decisive action towards sustainability. By setting and achieving rigorous environmental targets, Nikon not only contributes to global sustainability goals but also sets an example for others in the industry to follow.
