Hope For Nigerian Twins After Successful Separation Surgery In Riyadh

In a significant medical achievement, two-year-old Nigerian conjoined twins, Hassana and Hussaina, are on the path to recovery after undergoing a complex separation surgery in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The operation, which marks a milestone in medical history, was conducted on 29 February at the King Abdullah Specialized Children Hospital within King Abdulaziz Medical City, under the auspices of the Ministry of the National Guard.

Under the expert guidance of Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, a globally recognized surgeon specializing in the separation of conjoined twins, the procedure spanned 16 hours and 30 minutes across nine surgical phases. Dr. Al Rabeeah, who heads the Saudi Conjoined Twins Separation Programme, led a dedicated team of 40 doctors and nurses, supported by a multidisciplinary team of 107 staff members. This operation is celebrated as one of the most intricate in the programme's 33-year tenure.

New Life for Nigerian Twins Post-Surgery

The successful surgery is a beacon of hope for Hassana and Hussaina's future, promising them a chance at a normal and fulfilling life. Dr. Al Rabeeah expressed his optimism for the twins' recovery and his gratitude for being able to contribute to their journey towards a healthy life. The twins had arrived in Saudi Arabia on 30 October 2023 for initial assessments and underwent a preparatory 10-hour neurological surgery on 30 December ahead of their final separation.

Born in Kaduna State, Nigeria, as part of a triplet birth, Hassana and Hussaina were conjoined at the pelvis with four lower limbs. Their successful separation does not mark the end of their medical journey; it heralds a period of rehabilitation essential for their complete recovery. Dr. Al Rabeeah emphasized that such operations are meticulously planned to ensure they are conducted at an optimal time in the patients' lives, maximizing their chances for long-term success.

This landmark surgery is the 60th successful separation carried out by Dr. Al Rabeeah and his team since the inception of the programme in 1990. Over three decades, Saudi Arabia has established itself as a leader in this highly specialized field, undertaking some of the most challenging separations recorded.

The Saudi government, under the directives of King Salman bin Abdulaziz and HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, sponsors the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme. This initiative covers all medical expenses for the twins and their accompanying family members, underscoring the nation's commitment to humanitarian aid.

The parents of Hassana and Hussaina have expressed their profound gratitude towards Dr. Al Rabeeah and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for providing their daughters with an opportunity for a new lease on life. This gesture not only reflects the medical team's dedication but also highlights Saudi Arabia's role in extending its support beyond its borders to those in need.
