NHS App Praised By Patients But Falls Short On Information Access, Study Shows

In a recent study conducted by the Digital Coalition, findings reveal that while the NHS App is generally well-received by users in England, there are notable areas for improvement that could enhance its usability and functionality. The survey, which garnered participation from over 600 individuals across England, sheds light on the public's perception and usage of the NHS App, a pivotal tool in modern healthcare management.

According to the survey results, a significant majority, 78% of respondents, actively use the NHS App. Among these users, 81% praised its ease of use, and 70% acknowledged its value in their healthcare regimen. Despite these positive figures, the report uncovers a gap in the app's offerings, particularly the inability to access test results and personal health records directly through the platform. This limitation has reportedly affected some users' motivation to engage with the app.

NHS App: Valued but Limited

The study also highlighted a portion of the population that either never or rarely utilizes the NHS App due to technical challenges or a lack of confidence and skills in navigating digital tools. Additionally, there's a clear preference among some patients for traditional face-to-face healthcare services, underscoring the importance of maintaining multiple avenues for patient care and ensuring digital solutions complement rather than replace personal interactions.

Respondents to the survey have voiced their desire for enhancements to the NHS App, including broader access to personal health information and improvements in app accessibility. The report concludes with several recommendations aimed at bolstering the app's utility and user experience. These include raising awareness about the app's features, ensuring universal access to health information, simplifying navigation, and offering clear guidance on the various healthcare apps available to patients.

NHS England has responded positively to these insights, with Dr. Vin Diwakar, Interim national director for transformation at NHS England, expressing gratitude towards the Patients Association and other contributors for their role in highlighting ways to maximize digital self-care's benefits. Notably, since the survey's completion, updates have been made to enhance the NHS App's layout and usability, indicating a commitment to continuous improvement based on user feedback.
