Nestlé Steps Up With Sustainable Packaging Solutions And Global Waste Management Initiatives

On the occasion of Global Recycling Day, Nestlé has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to sustainability by emphasizing its efforts to enhance packaging designs for better recyclability and its initiatives to support waste management improvements. Antonia Wanner, Nestlé's Head of ESG Strategy and Deployment, outlined the company's comprehensive approach towards reducing packaging waste and fostering a more sustainable environment.

Nestlé has made notable progress in its packaging strategies, with 83.5% of its plastic packaging globally being designed for recycling by the end of 2023. This initiative is part of Nestlé's broader vision to ensure that none of its packaging contributes to landfill waste or environmental litter. The company has also made strides in the UK and Ireland by transitioning popular products such as Quality Street sweets and Smarties to recyclable paper packaging.

Nestlé's Push for Greener Packaging

However, the journey towards effective recycling does not stop at designing recyclable packaging. There is a pressing need for enhanced waste management infrastructure to ensure these materials are actually recycled. Nestlé is actively collaborating with governments, industry alliances, civil society, and consumers across various regions to develop and improve recycling systems. The company supports the UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution and advocates for well-designed mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility and Deposit Return Systems regulation.

In a move to bolster recycling infrastructure, Nestlé has invested GBP 7 million into a new recycling facility in Durham, UK, set to process flexible plastics. This facility is expected to open later this year. Additionally, in Belgium, a partnership between Nespresso, Nestlé, JDE Peet’s, and FostPlus has introduced the Blue Bag initiative since January 1, 2023, allowing for the collection of all beverage capsules and pods for recycling.

In Brazil, Nestlé's collaboration with the Recicleiros Cidades project highlights the company's commitment to community engagement and environmental stewardship. This initiative not only provides job training but also promotes consumer education on recycling and implements waste collection infrastructure across 11 Brazilian states, empowering over 8,000 recycling professionals.

Nestlé's dedication to sustainability extends to its use of recycled and renewable materials in packaging. By the end of 2023, 41.5% of Nestlé's total packaging was made from recycled or renewable content. The company aims to increase the use of food-grade recycled polyethylene (rPE) and polypropylene (rPP) in its product packaging, including brands like Nesquik, KitKat, and Purina.

Nestlé's ongoing efforts reflect a strong commitment to keeping packaging materials within the circular economy and out of the environment. Through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions, Nestlé is leading by example in the global movement towards more sustainable packaging and waste management practices.
