US Theatre Audiences To Experience Chinese Cultural Gem With Modern Musical Dongpo Debut

In March 2024, a unique cultural event is set to captivate audiences in the United States with its debut performances. The modern musical "Dongpo: Life in Poems" will grace the stages of the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and the David H. Koch Theater at New York City's Lincoln Center, offering a total of eight shows. This production is a collaborative effort between the China Oriental Performing Arts Group Co., Ltd. and the MeiShan Song and Dance Theatre, aiming to present the depth and allure of traditional Chinese culture through innovative artistic expressions.

The narrative core of "Dongpo: Life in Poems" centers around Su Shi (1037-1101), also known as Su Dongpo, a revered figure in Chinese history. Hailing from Meizhou, now known as Meishan in Sichuan Province, Su Dongpo was an accomplished writer and poet, celebrated for his liberal spirit and resilience. His contributions to literature and culture earned him a spot on France's Le Monde's "Heroes of the Millennium" list. The musical integrates various art forms, including modern choreography, guqin music, poetry, calligraphy, painting, and carving, to vividly portray Su Dongpo's emotional landscape.

Modern Musical Dongpo Debuts in US

Shen Wei, an internationally acclaimed producer, director, choreographer, painter, and visual artist, leads the production of "Dongpo: Life in Poems." Shen Wei's innovative approach intertwines 12 of Su Dongpo's poems and proses with dance movements and musical compositions, creating an artistic dialogue that bridges centuries. After 20 months of development and 19 iterations, the production has been met with critical acclaim for its artistic depth and innovative representation of traditional Chinese culture.

The staging of "Dongpo: Life in Poems" aims to create a poetic atmosphere that embodies the essence of Su Dongpo's spirit without depicting his personal life directly. This blend of traditional and contemporary elements offers American audiences an unparalleled artistic experience.

A Gathering of Artistic Talents

The production boasts a team of distinguished artists from China and abroad. Among them are Chinese-French composer Chen Qigang, national grade I scriptwriter Guo Changhong, Beijing Olympic Games Opening Ceremony lighting designer Xiao Lihe, and Deputy Director of the China Calligraphy Institute Yang Tao. Their collective expertise ensures that the choreography, music, scripting, lighting, and calligraphy of "Dongpo: Life in Poems" are of exceptional quality.

Supported by the "Image China" brand since its inception in 2009, this U.S. debut is part of a broader initiative to showcase Chinese performances internationally. The collaboration with the American Dance Festival underscores a commitment to presenting a modern musical masterpiece imbued with Chinese aesthetics.

As anticipation builds for the upcoming shows at the Kennedy Center and David H. Koch Theater, audiences are eager to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of traditional Chinese culture. Moreover, "Dongpo: Life in Poems" is scheduled to tour France and the Hong Kong and Macao regions later in 2024. Meishan, Su Dongpo's birthplace, plans to leverage these tours to promote its cultural heritage, ecology, landscapes, cuisine, and intangible cultural assets both online and onsite.

The international tours not only celebrate Su Dongpo's enduring legacy but also offer a platform for cross-cultural exchange and understanding. As these performances approach, they promise to be a significant cultural highlight of 2024.
