Mobile Barber App Appacut Outpaces UK's Largest High-Street Barber Chains
In a significant development within the UK's grooming industry, Manchester-based Appacut has surpassed the UK High Street's largest barber chain in hosting professional barbers. Launched just a year ago, Appacut has rapidly emerged as a leading online marketplace for independent, fully mobile barbers and stylists, enabling them to establish successful online businesses without the high overheads and marketing costs associated with owning a physical shop.
Appacut's innovative business model, which does not involve employing barbers directly or owning physical barbershops, mirrors the operational strategies of companies like Uber and Airbnb. This approach has allowed Appacut to focus on providing a sleek, user-friendly app interface through which customers can book home haircuts in just four clicks. This service is particularly appealing to those with time constraints, no access to personal transport, or those looking to avoid the hassle of city parking.

The company is now embarking on a major expansion drive, with its management team confident that the promise of earnings significantly above the industry average will attract more independent barbers to join the platform. Appacut guarantees its service providers earnings that are two to three times what they would typically make in traditional brick-and-mortar settings. This is achieved by topping up barbers' earnings when they meet certain targets, ranging from £500 for 10 cuts per month to £5,000 for full-time 'appacutters' achieving 200 cuts per month.
Michael Lawes of Appacut highlighted the changing consumer demand for on-demand, home services as a key driver behind the app's success. He pointed out the UK's substantial demand for haircuts, with more than 360 million haircuts paid for annually. Appacut aims to meet this demand by offering customers an easy way to browse and select from dozens of local barbers and stylists.
CTO Jordan Ryan Madeley emphasized the central role of technology in Appacut's operations. The app not only facilitates convenient bookings for customers but also provides barbers with a suite of marketing and management tools. By visiting customers' homes equipped with all necessary styling tools, professionals can significantly reduce their operating costs while offering clients the convenience of not having to travel.
With rising High Street rents and utility bills in the UK, Appacut's model is proving increasingly attractive to independent barbers and business owners seeking more profitable avenues. The app has already garnered a loyal following in Manchester, including VIPs, professional footballers, and celebrities who value the privacy and convenience it offers.
Following a successful six-figure investment round last year, Appacut is now poised for further growth. The company plans to raise a new investment round to fuel its expansion across the UK and potentially into international markets. This move underscores Appacut's ambition to redefine the barbering and hairdressing sector in response to evolving consumer preferences.
