'Mini Dubai' Shines In Kolkata: Burj Khalifa, Atlantis The Royal, Palm Reimagined At Durga Puja Celebrations
Kolkata has been transformed to resemble a mini Dubai, thanks to the imaginative efforts of the IB Block Durga Puja Committee in Salt Lake (Bidhannagar). They've embarked on a creative venture to celebrate the Durga Puja festival, a UNESCO-listed Hindu event, with a dazzling Dubai Theme.
The central attraction of this spectacle is a 160-foot replica of the Burj Khalifa, which is complemented by meticulous recreations of other notable UAE landmarks. These include the Dubai Frame, Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeirah, Ain Dubai, Address Sky View, and Atlantis The Royal.

The setup not only features a captivating light show on the Burj Khalifa replica but also presents visitors with the sights of a golden-lit Dubai Frame and an enthralling water-and-fire display at the mini Palm Jumeirah.
The comprehensive project, costing around AED 3 million, was brought to life over 90 days by the hard work of more than 200 artisans. They employed an array of materials, from traditional ones like bamboo, wood, and thermocol, to modern elements such as acrylic, fiberglass, and LEDs.
The combination of these materials, along with sophisticated lighting techniques, has resulted in a grand spectacle that lights up beautifully after dark, drawing thousands of visitors to the site.
UNESCO has acknowledged the significance of Durga Puja in Kolkata by inscribing it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021. This recognition celebrates the festival’s thematic creativity and artistic expression, which annually attracts millions of visitors globally.

Dr. Subir Choudhury, president of the IB Block Durga Puja Committee, emphasised the event's aim to merge Dubai's cosmopolitan allure with Bengali traditional artistry. This year's theme, according to him, is designed to transport the essence of Dubai’s vibrant energy and modern architecture right to Kolkata’s heart, offering a distinct cultural experience to all attendees.
"Our aim is to seamlessly blend the cosmopolitan charm of Dubai with traditional Bengali artistry and devotion to Maa Durga, offering a one-of-a-kind cultural experience for all visitors," Dr. Choudhury stated.
The success of this Dubai-themed pandal is attributed to the extensive support from sponsors and community partners, as well as the dedication of the artisans. Dr. Choudhury expressed his gratitude towards everyone involved and highlighted the expected influx of thousands of daily visitors, making it a highlight event in Salt Lake.

As the celebration continues, the IB Block Durga Puja Committee extends an invitation to both devotees and curious visitors to experience this unique fusion of faith, creativity, and international cultural celebration. Amidst the replicated skyline of Dubai, attendees are welcomed to seek the blessings of Maa Durga, showcasing a vibrant example of cross-cultural respect and unity.
