Astrology Shapes Millennials' Romantic Choices And Life Decisions, Says Harris Poll
A recent survey conducted by The Harris Poll in January 2024 has unveiled the significant role astrology plays in the lives of Americans, especially among Millennials. The survey, which gathered responses from 2,069 U.S. adults, indicates a broad acceptance of astrology across the nation, with 85% of participants holding a positive or neutral stance towards it. A notable 61% of Americans find solace and guidance in astrology during times of uncertainty.
Millennials, in particular, are turning to astrology not just for entertainment but as a guide for personal and romantic decisions. Over half of this demographic consults their horoscopes before dates, and 40% have even opted out of a date based on astrological incompatibility. Astrology's influence extends beyond dating to areas such as self-care, romantic relationships, and career choices, with Millennials leading the charge in seeking astrological advice for career (65%) and relationship (81%) matters.

The survey highlights the importance of astrological compatibility in dating for Millennials. A vast majority (81%) have preferred zodiac signs they wish to date, while nearly as many exhibit aversions to certain signs. This generation is well-informed about their astrological compatibilities, with 64% aware of their most compatible signs and 56% checking a potential date's sign beforehand. Libra, Gemini, and Aquarius (Air signs) along with Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius (Fire signs) are particularly favored, whereas Scorpios find themselves the least desired for romantic pursuits.
Astrology's impact is not confined to romantic endeavors; it also influences self-perception and identity. An overwhelming 95% of Americans are aware of their astrological sign, with a significant number even knowledgeable about their pet’s sign. Two-thirds believe their sign accurately reflects their personality traits. While many engage with astrology for its entertainment value, others view it as a tool for deeper self-understanding and reflection.
Contrary to the stereotype that astrology appeals more to women, the study found that men are equally likely to be firm believers in astrology. Men also tend to consult astrology more frequently than women and are willing to invest more in astrology services monthly.
Astrology as an Alternative Belief System
For Millennials, astrology serves as more than just a pastime; it offers an alternative to traditional religious beliefs. Approximately one-third of Millennials see astrology as providing belief in something greater than themselves, with 56% acknowledging that astrology is more prevalent among their peers than religion.
The willingness to spend on astrological content and services is notable among Americans. On average, 29% of U.S. adults pay for astrological services monthly, with expenditures ranging between $20 to $49. A segment even spends $100 or more per month on such content. Among Millennials, this propensity to invest in astrology is even higher, with over half (56%) paying for astrological content.
This comprehensive study by The Harris Poll sheds light on the pervasive influence of astrology in American culture. It underscores the significant role astrology plays not only in guiding personal and romantic decisions but also as a form of self-identification and an alternative belief system for many Americans, particularly Millennials.
