Microsoft Secures 95,000 Tons Of Biochar Carbon Credits In A New Deal With The Next 150
In a significant move towards sustainability and carbon negativity, The Next 150, a Swiss-based climate-forward venture, has entered into a six-year purchase agreement with tech giant Microsoft. This deal involves the supply of 95,000 tons of high-quality Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) credits from The Next 150's General Biochar Systems (GBS) business unit's inaugural biochar plant located in Guanajuato, Mexico. This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for The Next 150, positioning it as a leading supplier in the nascent carbon removal industry.
Patrick Atanasije Pineda, Managing Partner at The Next 150, highlighted the importance of such multi-year commitments. He stated that agreements like the one with Microsoft enable the mobilization of large-scale biochar projects across Latin America. This is achieved by attracting institutional finance for project-level lending, which is supported by creditworthy offtakes. Brian Marrs, Senior Director for Energy and Carbon Removal at Microsoft, echoed this sentiment. He remarked that their ongoing partnership with The Next 150 is crucial for Microsoft's ambition to become carbon negative by 2030 through a diversified portfolio of carbon removal solutions.

Founded in late 2022, The Next 150 quickly established its first biochar production facility, General Biochar Systems, in Mexico. By October 2023, the project had already begun integrating its biochar into state-run quarry rehabilitation efforts aimed at restoring degraded landscapes and enhancing biodiversity. The initiative works closely with local governments and civil society organizations to potentially supply up to 23,000 local farmers with biochar. This sustainable and regenerative soil amendment promises numerous co-benefits, including improved crop yields, reduced reliance on chemical fertilizers, and decreased plant stress during prolonged drought conditions.
The company is on track to deliver high-quality CDR credits by mid-2024 on the Puro.Earth registry. Furthermore, plans are underway to have two more plants operational in Latin America by 2025. This expansion underscores The Next 150's commitment to sustainability and its role in combating climate change through innovative investments in the carbon credits market.
